The surgical team are looking to recruit a Pelvic Oncology Fellow to join the team on a fixed term basis for 12 months to commence in post 6th August 2025. The colorectal unit in Swansea treats 250 new cancer cases per year. The Swansea Pelvic Oncology service is the only dedicated multi-disciplinary pelvic oncology team in Wales. The service treats patients with locally advanced and locally recurrent pelvic malignancy originating from any of the pelvic organs. Patients are regularly referred to Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) from all Health Boards in Wales for specialist MDT assessment. The Swansea pelvic oncology team has for over 20 years provided multidisciplinary care to patients with advanced pelvic malignancy for primary and recurrent disease. The surgical team comprises three colorectal, three urological, two gynaecological and one plastic surgeon. In the last few years on average over 50 advanced pelvic resections have been performed for locally advanced primary and recurrent rectal cancer. The volume of surgery has increased markedly over the last few years. In addition, the fellow would be exposed to surgery for advanced gynaecological and urological malignancies. The fellow will be involved in all aspects of management from diagnosis to treatment and follow up. Main duties of the job To develop the surgical skills and techniques to perform surgery for locally advanced and recurrent pelvic cancer, including multi-visceral resections and exenterations. This would include cystectomy, radical hysterectomy and vulvectomy as well as sacrectomy. To provide senior trainees with increased exposure to rectal cancer surgery including Lap and open low anterior resection and eLAPE and open pelvic side wall dissection. To provide senior trainees with exposure to different reconstructive approach after major colorectal pelvic resections. About us Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot. We also have community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals. The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University, aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of Southwest Wales. Swansea is Wales' second largest city and sits on the five-mile sweep of Swansea Bay. An ideal base for exploring South-West Wales, there is also much on offer for visitors in Swansea itself. Swansea has a range of shops, cosy cafes, great restaurants, art galleries as well as being able to offer good outdoor lifestyle with its beautiful coastline and beaches on the Gower Peninsula. Swansea also has excellent sporting facilities including the Wales National pool and stadium home to the Ospreys and Swansea City Football Club.
