JOB DESCRIPTION Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences is seeking a Child and Youth Counsellor (CYC). The CYC will work with adolescents with complex eating disorders and other comorbid mental illnesses in partnership with a multidisciplinary team, their families, and community agencies to enhance their independence and coping skills, and develop the tools necessary for community integration through peer interaction, group treatment, and individual therapy. The CYC must provide evaluation, assessment, and therapeutic interventions using a strength-based model of care that incorporates modern mental health techniques and the principles of Child and Youth Counseling in a psychiatric setting. The successful incumbent will foster a culture of trust, leadership, dependability, and accountability, ensuring a safe, healthy, and stimulating environment for adolescents. Working as a member of the inter-professional team, the CYC will assist in creating management programs for individuals and groups to stabilize various psychiatric disorders. Responsibilities include providing life skills training through formal instruction and example, assisting co-workers in a classroom, day treatment setting, family therapy, or other ongoing therapies, using appropriate techniques to diffuse extreme behaviors, managing psychiatric crises, and assessing mental status. Some travel may be required.

Required Qualifications: Child and Youth Worker Diploma. OACYC membership in good standing. Certification in First Aid and CPR. CPR Level HCP (Health Care Provider). Demonstrated experience working with developmentally, physically, and emotionally disturbed adolescents. Preferred knowledge and experience with eating disorders. Preferred knowledge in CBT and/or DBT. Demonstrated knowledge of normal and abnormal development and treatment approaches (i.e., behavior management). Demonstrated knowledge of individual, family, and group assessment and counseling. Demonstrated knowledge of psychiatric disorders (specifically OCD and PTSD). Demonstrated knowledge of crisis intervention techniques. Demonstrated knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act, Mental Health, and relevant policies and legislation, such as the Mental Health Act and PHIPA. Demonstrated working knowledge/experience with computers. Meditech experience preferred. Proven excellent interpersonal skills and effective oral/written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership. Demonstrated excellent organizational, analytical, prioritization, problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, and conflict resolution abilities. Ability to perform the physical demands of the position. Proven good attendance record with the capability of maintaining this same standard.

Licenses & Certifications: Reg Child Youth Worker.
