PhD Studentship in Quantum Communications, Cambridge

Client:

Toshiba Location:

Cambridge, United Kingdom Job Description:

Quantum communications uses quantum mechanical phenomena to develop new and improved data transfer technologies. The field is currently experiencing immense interest, with many interesting open scientific problems and significant opportunities for developing practical new systems with wide-ranging benefits, such as securing telecommunication networks as well as connecting up emerging quantum computing hardware. Toshiba Europe Ltd have been at the forefront of research in quantum technology, particularly quantum communications and quantum key distribution (QKD) for the past two decades. During this time they have made many breakthroughs, such as record high quantum communication bit rates, operation over international-length-scale fibres and the miniaturisation of complete quantum systems onto photonic chips. Recently, Toshiba launched a new business unit to commercialise research outcomes and Toshiba QKD systems are now deployed in telecommunication networks across the world. We are currently inviting applications for PhD studentship positions at Toshiba‘s Cambridge Research Laboratory. A range of experimental projects are available and you will have the opportunity to join a dynamic and supportive team and play a significant role in developing new quantum communication technologies. You will work alongside industrial research scientists to leverage ideas across the fields of quantum, optics, electronics and communications to design, conduct and analyse frontier quantum experiments. Research outcomes will be published in leading academic journals and presented at international conferences. Each studentship is offered in collaboration with one of the UK’s leading universities. Minimum Requirements: Candidates should hold (or be expecting) a first-class or upper second-class degree in Physics, Electronic Engineering or a similar subject. A solid background in optics and quantum physics, as well as the desire to join a multidisciplinary team undertaking cutting-edge experimental research, are essential. If you are interested, please apply to get in contact with us about current available PhD opportunities.
