The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. Position Responsibilities: Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, and updating patient information. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures. Properly explain the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner. Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperature. Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual department trainings. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Minimum Qualifications: Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required in some states. Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED with 1-4+ years of experience.
