The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels: Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols & training Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies Safe and effective use of the centrifuge machine to preserve samples for later collection Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a correct and timely manner Maintaining an effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory and courier staff Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters Reporting all incidents and anomalies to the management team Raising significant patient issues with GP, nursing or management team as appropriate In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to: Participate in practice audits as directed or required Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care Support and participate in shared learning within the practice Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
