The Captain’s responsibilities include managing daily operations for their respective bureaus and overseeing the supervision of sergeants, police officers, police technicians, and other employees assigned to their bureau. When one Bureau Commander is absent, the other Captain assumes responsibility for both bureaus until relieved.
Police Captains are trusted advisors to the office of the Chief of Police. They also play a key role in organizational decision-making, including long-term departmental planning, employee training and development, and community engagement.
Requirements The minimum qualifications for the position are: High school diploma or equivalent Must be a current Lieutenant with West Chester Township Police Department Specialized training such as the Police Executive Leadership College (PELC), or other industry recognized professional development courses Preferred qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree in a law enforcement related field from a nationally recognized, accredited university Advanced Leadership training such as the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University Staff and Command, Southern Police Institute’s Command or Administrative Officers course, Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE), or other industry recognized professional development courses Advanced education, management certifications, or extensive experience in the field may be substituted for education and/or experience. The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for West Chester Township Police Captain is a strategic thinker with the ability to manage day-to-day operations while also planning for future needs and challenges of the department.
A Police Captain must be able to interact with all levels of the organization and the West Chester community. A Captain must have a friendly, team-oriented attitude focused on employee development and the organizational Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles.
Successful candidates will have demonstrated skills in leadership, communication, management, and community relations and a proven track record of high personal and professional ethics and integrity.
Compensation The expected hiring range is $116,000 to $129,000, depending on qualifications.
