Part time
Job offered by: HM Treasury

Location: Darlington

Are you looking to join a welcoming, friendly and diverse team, working at the heart of Government's economic and fiscal objectives? If so, we'd love to hear from you!

About the Team

The Corporate Tax (CT) team work on high-profile and politically important policy measures that are central to the government’s economic and fiscal objectives. This might be encouraging business investment, improving the UK’s international competitiveness, protecting the UK’s tax base or finding new ways of raising revenue.

Our work can be dynamic and fast paced with short deadlines at times. The focus is on tax areas that are technical but equally prone to hit the newspaper headlines, meaning the work is relatable and very exciting. You will be given lots of support and on the job training to help you develop the skills needed.

About the Role

We are looking for a Policy Adviser to join our team’s Strategy Branch, which is responsible for the domestic CT system and a range of other taxes including the Digital Services tax and Electricity Generator Levy.

This role is stretching and provides a great opportunity to work on high-profile issues that have a direct impact on the government’s finances, on companies, and on the UK’s attractiveness as a place to do business. Our work frequently changes at short notice in response to ministerial requests and collaborator engagement, which draws attention to new policy challenges.

Key accountabilities

  • Understanding and advising ministers on emerging issues in Corporation Tax, working closely with HMRC policy partners
  • Leading on analysis, project management, SPB processes, and advice to ministers on specific Corporation Tax measures in the Budget process and Finance Bills
  • Taking forward elements of policy on the future of Corporation Tax
  • Working with the rest of HMT and other government departments to explain the Corporation Tax system and impact on their objectives

These accountabilities may change over time to reflect ministerial priorities, and the needs of the wider CT team. The post will not have any formal line management responsibility but there will be opportunities to develop skills in mentoring colleagues and leading projects.

About you

Our ideal candidate will be skilled at analysing and using a range of relevant information to support your decision making. You’ll have a straightforward, honest and engaging communication style and able to maximise the impact of your message, as well as remaining alert to emerging trends and issues which might impact your work area.
