Postdoctoral Researchers – National Oceanography Centre

Marine Physicists are part of TICTOC (Transient tracer-based Investigation of Circulation and Thermal Ocean Change), a recently funded NERC Large Grant that will ascertain the credibility of projections of regional ocean warming. Using a new approach pioneered in the modelling community, the strength and pattern of the net uptake of heat by the ocean (the ‘added heat’) that sets global mean sea level rise is treated like a passive tracer. Regionally however, ocean heat content change is also substantially impacted by the redistribution of existing ocean heat due to changes in ocean circulation and air-sea fluxes. Understanding the added heat component in the contemporary ocean is key to predicting its future. As a Marine Physicist (in MSM) you will focus on models, describing the varying temperature field through analysis of NEMO and other OMIP models. This will include adding the radioactive isotope tracer carbon-14 and idealised age-dye tracers to the NEMO model. The model fields will then be analysed, including using a Green’s function analysis that will be common to this part of the project as well as to the observational and coupled climate model analysis happening elsewhere in the project. You will have strong mathematical and programming skills and the ability to modify model code and interpret the output. This is a Fixed Term Appointment, with funding on a full-time basis for three years offered on NERC terms and conditions and open to internal and external candidates. We welcome applications for full and part-time working. About You: You will be a motivated and productive scientist, joining a network of international researchers involved as project partners, investigators, postdoctoral researchers, and students. The ability to work as part of such a team is essential. Salary: This is a postdoctoral research (Band 6) position and the salary band will be £28,200 to £30,600 per annum. For part-time posts, the salary will be calculated on a pro rata basis and all part-time employees will have full access to NERC benefits. Hours of Work: The hours of working are 37 hours per week for a full-time post and reduced pro-rata for a part-time post. What We Can Offer You: In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 14 Public/local days off and free car-parking. Opportunities for further training and development are supported. About Us: The National Oceanography Centre (NOC), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world. With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development. Working closely with its partners and associates, it provides capability to meet needs across the UK marine science community. If you have any questions about these posts please contact the Principal Investigator for ABC-fluxes and TICTOC, Dr Elaine McDonagh (e.mcdonagh@noc.ac.uk).
