Overview We are looking for a caring and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support to a primary-aged child with additional needs. This rewarding role involves working closely with the child to help them access the curriculum, manage challenges, and thrive in a supportive learning environment. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children who require additional support due to needs such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, dyslexia, or behavioural and emotional challenges. Duties Provide personalised 1:1 support to a child with specific learning and developmental needs, ensuring they feel included and supported in their learning. Assist the class teacher in adapting and delivering lessons tailored to the child's individual education plan (IEP). Implement strategies to manage behavioural and emotional challenges, using de-escalation techniques and positive reinforcement. Help the child develop social skills and confidence through small-group activities and structured play. Support the child's wellbeing by offering encouragement, fostering self-esteem, and providing a calm and reassuring presence. Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and parents to monitor progress and adapt strategies as needed. Maintain detailed records of the child's achievements and challenges, contributing to reviews and planning discussions. Skills Previous experience working with children with additional needs in a primary school setting. Understanding of strategies to support children with ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, and emotional or behavioural difficulties. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build trust and rapport with the child and their support network. Patience, resilience, and adaptability when responding to the child's changing needs and circumstances. Creative approaches to engaging the child in learning, such as sensory activities, visual aids, or hands-on tasks. Familiarity with behaviour management techniques and supporting emotional regulation. Examples of Support Assisting a child with ASD by creating a structured daily routine and using visual aids to support understanding. Supporting a child with ADHD by incorporating movement breaks and focusing exercises into their day to help maintain attention. Encouraging a child with dyslexia to engage in literacy tasks by using alternative resources such as audio books or coloured overlays. Providing emotional reassurance to a child struggling with anxiety, helping them transition between activities with confidence.
