Transport for the North was established in 2018 as the first Sub-national Transport Body in England, formed to transform the transport system for the North of England, providing the strategic infrastructure needed for enhanced economic growth. As a partnership, we bring together the North’s local transport authorities and business leaders with delivery partners, like Network Rail and National Highways, and work closely with government. We support and enable delivery of the North’s Strategic Transport Plan ambitions to drive sustainable and inclusive growth. Our role is to add strategic value by ensuring that funding and strategy decisions about transport in the North are informed by local knowledge and requirements. We have powers devolved from central government to work together to deliver strategic transport priorities. Our vision is of a thriving North of England, where modern transport connections drive economic growth and support an excellent quality of life. This role involves delivering a range of research projects, data tools and partner support in relation to decarbonisation and climate adaptation, as well as ensuring TfN and its partners are aware of the opportunities and challenges posed by the latest technologies. You will explore the complex inter-relationships between new technologies and the need for a fair and prosperous decarbonisation transition for the North. The role will maintain existing and build new networks and relationships, both internally and externally, working closely with our partner authorities and our rail, road and transport appraisal and modelling teams (TAME), supporting TfN’s Strategic Ambitions and our objectives in relation to decarbonisation and connected mobility. What We’re Looking For: The successful candidate will have significant experience in transport decarbonisation and wider environmental and sustainability aspects, and the ability to apply this experience in complex strategy and policy situations. You must have experience in tracking new technologies related to transport systems, such as connected and autonomous vehicles, as well as relevant sectors like artificial intelligence and digital connectivity, developing related advice, policy and research projects. You should have the confidence and ability to navigate the complex trade-offs involved in transport decarbonisation and infrastructure development, developing effective narratives to ensure TfN and its partners progress toward achieving the outcomes defined within our STP. The successful candidate must be comfortable engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure TfN’s work in these areas remains relevant and optimises value for our local partners, as well as the ability to represent TfN in various public and professional forums. Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or other specialist post-graduate qualification (or equivalent experience) in an environmental, sustainability, or transport-related subject.
