The primary objective of this role is to guide our evolution from complex manual workflows to a cutting-edge, highly automated, and integrated laboratory system. This position marks a crucial step in our commitment to advancing technology for more efficient and impactful biodiversity monitoring.

Process Development and Optimisation

Enhance Molecular Biology Protocols:

Develop and optimise protocols for DNA extraction, PCR, and high-throughput sequencing, balancing efficiency, reproducibility, cost-effectiveness, and quality to meet project and client objectives. Introduce Automation:

Identify and integrate automated technologies—such as liquid handling systems, robotic platforms, and high-throughput instrumentation—into laboratory workflows, enhancing scalability and reliability. Streamline Processes:

Identify inefficiencies, resolve process failures, and implement robust controls to ensure consistent, high-quality outcomes. Project Management and Collaboration Deliver on Commitments:

Manage project timelines, resources, and milestones for scaling molecular biology processes, ensuring alignment with business goals and client requirements. Collaborate Across Teams:

Work closely with molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, and quality experts to ensure seamless execution of scale-up initiatives and successful implementation of innovative processes. Quality and Compliance Maintain Standards:

Ensure all laboratory processes comply with regulatory and quality standards, including Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and ISO certifications, to meet both internal and client expectations. Sustain Continuous Improvement:

Implement sustainable improvements to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and align with NatureMetrics’ commitment to environmental responsibility. Technology Transfer and Knowledge Sharing Standardise Procedures:

Support the transition of new technologies from R&D to production by developing standard operating procedures, training team members, and facilitating effective knowledge transfer.

About you

Experience and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related field; Master’s or PhD preferred. Proven experience in scaling laboratory operations and optimising molecular biology workflows. Strong knowledge of DNA extraction, PCR, sequencing techniques, and the underlying molecular biology principles. Specialist Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies Problem-Solving Expertise:

Ability to troubleshoot technical issues, propose solutions, and implement process enhancements. Project Management Skills:

Skilled in planning, executing, and monitoring projects within time and budget constraints. Collaborative Mindset:

Able to work effectively across interdisciplinary teams to achieve shared goals. Attention to Detail:

Meticulous documentation and commitment to quality control to ensure reliability and reproducibility. Resilience Under Pressure:

Demonstrated ability to prioritise effectively, handle competing demands, and deliver results in dynamic environments. Desirable Skills Familiarity with DNA-based monitoring, ecology, conservation, or molecular ecology. Experience implementing or integrating Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). Prior experience in start-up or scale-up environments. Knowledge of relevant industry regulations and quality standards.
