Based within our patient-focused IPU team, you will play a key role by delivering nursing care that is patient-centred and holistic. This is a role where you will really be given the time and space to get to know the people you support. Our service operates 24/7 and shift patterns include weekends and bank holidays and rotation onto night duty. We offer flexibility in shift patterns plus the opportunity to gain experience in other areas of hospice care, including community. From day 1, you will be fully supported in post with a robust and in-depth Induction, peer support and shared learning, and our new Clinical Skills Program. Provide nursing care that is at all times patient-centred, holistic and quality driven, ensuring optimum quality of life for all patients in the inpatient unit. Provide appropriate support and advice for families and carers working effectively alongside the multidisciplinary team across all clinical settings. Assist in the coordination of the nursing team regarding all aspects of clinical and operational activity. Assist in managing, operating and supporting a 24/7 response by providing appropriate clinical and non-clinical advice and support within the boundaries of the service, for patients with cancer and non-cancer palliative care needs. Educate colleagues and influence practice by talking to other health care professionals and participating in education programmes and research. Provide leadership and supervision to the wider nursing team, organising evidence-based, patient-centred care. In the absence of the senior staff nurses or lead nurse, if appropriate, assume the role of the nurse in charge, coordinating the operational day-to-day ward management, linking closely with the medical team. Offer advice and support to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological and social needs of families, carers and bereaved relatives advising on all aspects of care. Enable as much patient independence as possible within the limits of disease progression. Be competent to undertake all aspects of nursing activity including pain relief, symptom control, wound dressings, mouth care & nutrition needs, moving and handling, personal care, infection control, bowel management and all aspects of drug administration including syringe pumps. When appropriate, advise on the support and benefits that may be available to patients, refer to appropriate organisations. Encourage insight amongst staff into the many cultural aspects of life and death and the implications for planning nursing care whilst promoting and valuing equality and diversity.
