Duties and Responsibilities

Provides complete patient assessment, including vital signs and pre-examination procedures.

Gathers and assesses objective and subjective data from the patient.

Ensures that exam rooms are prepared and appropriately equipped.

Assists in treatments and procedures amongst an interdisciplinary team.

Provides ongoing patient assessment, monitoring and intervention throughout the appointment.

Administers medications via multiple routes and monitors their effects.

Assists the providers in all aspects of the consultation, treatment, procedures, and follow-up care.

Performs necessary clinical functions to facilitate delivery of comprehensive care and patient flow (e.g., assists providers with prescription ordering, cleans equipment).

Engages in ongoing health education to patients and their families.

Triages in-office patients and incoming emergent requests.

Documents data and assessments in the patient chart using computer system to ensure standard documentation, coding, and completion.

Liaises with external health providers.

Protects patient rights by maintaining the confidentiality of personal and financial information.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Medical knowledge and terminology

Ability to start and maintain IVs

Ability to interpret EKGs

Ability to work collaboratively within a healthcare team and within a broader interdisciplinary clinical team

Familiarity with sending lab requisitions, referrals, etc.

Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to make patients feel calm and comfortable

Self-starter with excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills

Qualifications and Experience

Valid Nursing License in Ontario in good standing

Active BLS, or willingness to be certified

2+ years of nursing experience

Experience working at a family practice office is considered an asset

Experience with Telus PS Suites is considered an asset
