About us

UCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from molecular scale to complex systems. Digital technologies promise to revolutionise sustainable processing and pave the way to a circular economy. Central to a circular economy is the recycling and reuse of materials, while maintaining their highest possible value, for resource efficiency and waste minimization. Metals, particularly critical and platinum group ones, are crucial for the transition to a net zero, information based, economy. We aim to develop digitally enabled technologies for the separation and recycle of metals from waste based on continuous intensified processing and demonstrate their potential via a digital twin prototype for exemplar separations, co-identified with our partners. About the role

The Research Fellow will be implementing and solving differential-algebraic models within an optimization based process design framework for the design of flexible and dynamic processes. The eventual process designs will be used to implement a digital twin of a process for electronic waste. The Research Fellow will work together with other researchers involved in experiments and model identification. This is a fixed-term role for 2 years in the first instance. About you

The successful candidate must hold a first degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline with a PhD in the above disciplines and in areas related to the numerical solution of differential equations. The candidate should have experience with optimization and the ability to write computer programs, ideally in Julia and/or Python, with experience with modelling systems. What we offer

As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents we also offer some great benefits some of which are below: 41 Days holiday (including 27 days annual leave, 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days) Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE) Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan On-Site nursery On-site gym Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay Employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service Discounted medical insurance Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce.
