About us

UCL is one of the world's top universities based in the heart of London. It is a modern, outward-looking institution. UCL's staff and former students have included 32 Nobel prizewinners. It is a truly international community: more than one-third of our student body - more than 35,000 strong - come from 150 countries and nearly one-third of staff are from outside the UK.

About the role

The UCL High Energy Physics Group has an opening for an outstanding particle physicist to work in the precision muon physics group, which comprises work on the Fermilab Muon g-2 and Mu2e experiments.

The aim of the position is to lead the search for the electric dipole moment of the muon at Muon g-2 using the full dataset. To commission and develop the DAQ for the STM detector at Mu2e. To prepare for and participate in the analysis of early data from Mu2e and to participate in the work of the Precision Muon Physics group at UCL.

This position is funded for 1 year in the first instance.

Candidates will need to upload a CV (including a list of publications), a statement of research interests and plans (3 pages maximum), and the contact information for two references. A cover letter can be included using the Statement in Support of your Application section of the online form.

The full Job Description and Person Specification can be found in the Available Documents section below.

Informal enquiries regarding the vacancy can be made to: Prof Gavin Hesketh - gavin.hesketh@ucl.ac.uk

About you

The successful applicant will have a PhD in Particle or Astroparticle Physics and expertise in data analysis and detector operations.

Candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communication.

Knowledge of precision muon experiments and searches is desirable.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be a Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £38,357 - £41,005 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
