This post is a rare opportunity for a Physiotherapist to join the Orthopaedic Research team. We are a multidisciplinary team that delivers research across both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital sites in elective ortho, trauma and sarcoma, as well as working closely with Plastics Research. Newcastle Hospitals is home to a Major Trauma Centre, the North of England Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Service, and the Regional Burns Service, among other specialist services, affording us the opportunity to work on a wide variety of studies and trials.

This post will predominantly be based at the RVI working in trauma research, but there may be a need for cross-site and cross-specialty working.

Our service runs Monday to Friday, and can involve early starts and occasional late finishes, however there are no weekend or on-call commitments.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to: lead a number of research studies and trials work to all regulatory guidelines including Good Clinical Practice, Informed Consent and Data Protection be a mentor and positive role model to other members of the team

We are looking for people with a keen eye for detail and excellent organisational skills, who want to be at the forefront of advances in clinical practice.

Job responsibilities

Under the direction of the orthopaedic research coordinator, to be responsible for the day-to-day running of specified clinical trials involving orthopaedic patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. This will include the recruitment, assessment and ongoing follow-up of patients for specific trials.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential

Highly specialised knowledge in musculoskeletal orthopaedic physiotherapy Knowledge of research methodology and an understanding of the research process Awareness of research governance issues An understanding of the application of research to clinical practice

Desirable

Knowledge of undertaking research and audit projects Basic knowledge of statistics in medical research

SKILLS

Essential

Advanced clinical skills High level of organisation and time management skills Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team IT skills including experience of Microsoft office Report writing and presentation skills

EXPERIENCE

Essential

Substantial post registration experience as a specialist physiotherapist within an NHS musculoskeletal or orthopaedic setting Evidence of research activity

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

Degree or Equivalent Diploma in Physiotherapy State Registered with Health and Care Professions Council Evidence of formal post-graduate courses and CPD

Desirable

Master's degree or willing to undertake qualification in health / research related topic Member of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
