·
Full time
The Resuscitation Service Lead will be responsible for overall strategic planning, organisation, and delivery of basic life support, intermediate life support, advanced life support training, and associated training in line with the Trust's CPR Training Policy and in accordance with National Resuscitation Council Guidelines.

The Resuscitation Service Lead will ensure a robust resuscitation service is provided Trust-wide and that the service provides appropriate support clinically, educationally, and managerially.

The Lead will ensure that the service meets any statutory and mandatory requirements in terms of training provision (including national, regional, and Deanery requirements), governance, resource allocation, and management.

The Lead will ensure effective operational delivery of this training via effective management of all resuscitation service resources.

The Lead will be required to audit and monitor standards of resuscitation practice and equipment within the Trust, assist with the procurement and monitoring of clinical equipment used during resuscitation within the Trust.

Ensure that appropriate resuscitation procedures and systems are developed, actively in place, and adhered to, having clinical expertise in resuscitation and being an advisor to clinical areas. Respond to cardiac arrest calls and Medical Emergency Calls, acting as an expert member of the team and facilitating experiential learning and team debrief where needed.

Lead, drive, and implement changes to ensure resuscitation, clinical simulation, and human factors education are delivered to a high-quality standard, contributing to service delivery, adding value to the organisation, and improving the safety and quality of care with compassion.

Develop and review the full Operational Policy and Procedure for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Review the Trust's Resuscitation policies in conjunction with the Resuscitation Committee and Resuscitation Council guidelines, ensuring they are regularly updated. Implement those operational policies governing resuscitation practice and training.

Identify and notify any risk management issues that may arise relating to resuscitation procedures or equipment. Be responsible for communicating relevant research findings and changes to resuscitation-based clinical practice to the multidisciplinary staff of the Trust. Ensure standardisation of resuscitation equipment in clinical areas and the efficient use of all resuscitation resources.

As the largest single-site specialist heart and chest hospital in the UK, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital has a clear vision 'to be the best cardiothoracic integrated healthcare organisation'. We provide specialist services in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, and respiratory medicine both in the hospital and out in the community.

We serve a catchment area of 2.8 million people, spanning Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, and the Isle of Man, and increasingly receive referrals from outside these areas for highly specialised services.

Our reputation for strong performance is important in delivering the best care for our patients and high-quality clinical services, underpinned by a culture of research and innovation, delivered in a modern estate, and our encouragement of flexible working.

Effectively engage staff across the Trust to develop and deliver strategic objectives by working with colleagues in different roles and professions to assist in effective implementation of new ideas/changes, which deliver results. Provide advice regarding resuscitation and simulated clinical skills training or Human Factors Training to support clinical practice issues, including liaising with the Simulation Lead Nurse.

Present at Trust committees regarding the development and delivery of the resuscitation and simulation strategy, including the provision of statistical data. Interpret national guidelines and policies to ensure education delivery promotes safe care delivery. Oversee the accurate and complete recording of all training activities to ensure accurate reporting capabilities. Maintain confidentiality as appropriate, including student, staff, and patient information and records. Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at the local level with a positive can-do approach. Report any issues and complaints to the Divisional Director of Nursing.

Attend meetings as delegated to the role. Liaise locally and nationally with other Resuscitation and Simulation networks. The post holder will work closely with the Outreach team to ensure that both services complement each other in providing support for critical care and deteriorating patients, plus those patients in cardiac arrest.

Act as Trust expert to ensure trust-wide review, audit, and standardisation of resuscitation equipment for patients in conjunction with the Critical Care Outreach Team and the Resuscitation Committee, ensuring cost-effective use of resources. Undertake investigations into related incidents, reporting to the Resuscitation Committee and Quality Safety Experience Committee.

Ensure regular audit and equipment checking systems are in place in accordance with Trust policy. Maintain service databases for audit of clinical resuscitation attempts and DNACPR. Advise the Trust Resuscitation Committee on setting clear standards of competency to be achieved by staff in resuscitation skills based on national legislation and guidance, ensuring that this is appropriately assessed and documented.

Be responsible for the review and update of resuscitation policies, keeping them in line with present Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines, European Resuscitation Council, and ILCOR Guidelines. Produce quarterly and annual resuscitation reports and present to the Quality Safety Experience Committee.

Conduct clinical audits on all cardiac arrests, peri-arrest, and false calls within the Trust. Ensure national adherence to best practices in the management of Do Not Resuscitate orders, disseminating information to medical and nursing staff about DNACPR policy. Audit the effectiveness of the resuscitation service by keeping accurate data from resuscitation attempts and producing an annual audit report.

Produce a Quarterly Ward Cardiac Arrest Report Audit and present to the Quality Safety Experience Committee. Identify staff training needs and ensure staff undergo regular resuscitation training to a level compatible with their expected clinical responsibilities. Act as a clinical resource to advise best practice for staff caring for acutely unwell patients on a trust-wide basis.

Plan and implement training programmes and sessions. Ensure that all staff have clear, unambiguous guidelines for dealing with a collapsed person anywhere within the hospital and its grounds. Ensure that all doctors, nursing staff, and professions allied to medicine (e.g., physiotherapists, radiographers, and occupational therapists) have basic life support training.

Regularly organise one-day Immediate Life Support (ILS) and half-day ILS recertification courses to meet the needs of those who need more advanced skills than those taught during basic life support but do not need the more comprehensive e-learning Advanced Life Support (ALS) course. Support all medical, nursing, and technical staff on the Trust’s run e-ALS course.

Ensure adequate training records are kept and liaise with the Learning and Development Department to feed information into the central database. All hospital-based resuscitation training should be repeated and reassessed at regular intervals. Training should be valid for a fixed period of time only, with updates recommended yearly as a minimum.

In conjunction with the HR Department, ensure that all new staff appointed receive appropriate induction resuscitation training before they commence a clinical placement. Instruct on, help organise, and promote the Acute Illness Management Course (A.I.M.S).
