About the team?

Our industry leading Revenue Protection and Counter Fraud Strategy sets out how we intend to tackle fraud and fraudulent travel on our network. This involves breaking new ground by expanding our capabilities to address the risk arising from those whose dishonest behaviour constitutes a fraud offence.

Focusing mainly upon journey related fraud you will form part of a team that are at the forefront of the investigation of all forms of fraud impacting upon the business.

About the job?

As a Revenue Investigator (RI) you will be involved in a wide variety of areas where fraud is a concern across the business. You will be involved in initiatives and investigations which aim to prevent, mitigate, deter, and detect prolific fare evasion and fraud that impacts upon the business.

You will be responsible for ensuring that evidence is lawfully and securely gathered during an investigation and champion compliance with criminal investigative legislation, so that loss can be safely recovered. If you do not possess relevant experience or qualification, you will be required to successfully complete an accredited training course.

Where appropriate, you will also support regional revenue protection duties and operations.

You will be mainly working within the main revenue recovery function, however, however you may be deployed into a specific investigation elsewhere within the business when the need arises. Therefore, a degree of flexibility is required.

You will be line managed on a day-to-day basis by an Assistant Fraud Manager.

Your main responsibilities will be?

  • Supporting Fraud Managers in delivering the GWR Revenue Protection and Counter-Fraud Strategy.
  • Conducting reactive investigations to both the criminal and civil standards of proof. Which will include obtaining witness statements and conducting interviews under caution as well as case file preparation.
  • Complying with the Police And Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
  • Complying with the Criminal Procedures Investigations Act 1996.
  • Participating in Revenue Protection and Fraud Intelligence gathering activities.
  • Working collaboratively across functions both internally and with external stakeholders to ensure the successful outcomes of initiatives and programs using all available options.
  • To prevent, mitigate, deter, and detect prolific fare evasion and fraud impacting upon the business.
  • Participating in proactive fraud prevention exercises on trains and at stations and within the wider workplace.
  • Promoting a positive counter fraud culture with the traveling public and within the workforce.
  • The professional assessment of all situations where Great Western Railway business and/or reputation may suffer disproportionately. You will be expected to use discretion where appropriate and act to prevent this happening.
  • Ensuring your personal safety and that of others.

You'll need to have/be:

  • Experience of investigating to the criminal and/or civil standards of proof.
  • An understanding of the role of revenue protection on the railway
  • A skilled communicator, ensuring an effective 2-way communication with colleagues and stakeholders. This includes actively listening and acting upon appropriate ideas for improvement generated by others.
  • Willing to work in a cross-functional manner as is necessary to meet departmental and corporate goals.
  • Be able to identify and objectively review evidence from multiple sources
  • Aware of your responsibilities regarding personal information and confidentiality under the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to build strong working relationships with colleagues both within the business and external partners.
  • Able to focus upon the reputation of the business in all that you do.

As a minimum you'll need to have:

  • An understanding of the current UK Fraud legislation, and a strong belief in the principles of Natural Justice.
  • A working understanding of Code C PACE 1984
  • An awareness of the rules of disclosure under the CPIA 1996
  • Experience in writing witness statements.

About the location?

The successful applicant can expect to be working at locations across our network.

Working Pattern?

Most days will be 9 to 5, however due to the nature of the job some flexibility will be required to achieve the operational goal.
