The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at Cambridge (https://www.msm.cam.ac.uk) is hiring an Application Scientist to join our Cambridge Royce Institute team. In this role, you will be instrumental in building partnerships with industry, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) to create and manage short-term projects addressing critical technology needs in film deposition, device fabrication, and characterisation. By supporting the Royce capabilities and the Royce Technology platform—the Physical Vapour Deposition and Characterisation Facility at Cambridge—you will help drive forward cutting-edge solutions. Key responsibilities include: Proactively engage with companies and research technology organisations to identify, initiate and run projects that align with Royce's capabilities and themes. Provide research consultancy and collaborate with external partners to develop and deliver sprint research projects, aiming for positive outcomes that generate additional funding for Royce facilities. Collaborate daily with research teams and academic staff to lead on the deposition of thin films as well as device fabrication and characterisation using a wide range of equipment. Administer research grants, working closely with the department's Research Grants team and funding bodies to ensure smooth management and compliance. Network within the wider Royce community, supporting ongoing collaborations between Royce, industry partners, and the broader Higher Education Institution (HEI) network. Your profile: Expertise in thin films growth, nano device fabrication, and electrical and magnetic characterisation at cryogenic temperatures. Expertise in planning, undertaking and reporting on complex technical projects within a research environment. Experience identifying funding opportunities and matching them with potential projects. Experience in a customer-facing role and excellent understanding of research context. Proven skills in stakeholder relations management. Negotiation skills with sponsors and academics for mutually beneficial projects. Experienced user of Microsoft Office suite and knowledgeable on grant application process and financial systems. Excellent communication skills, high level of attention to detail, self-motivated, and able to work to tight deadlines. Able to work autonomously and collaboratively with the Royce network. We operate a flexible working environment and are open to a range of contact hours and working patterns. Due to the need to foster a good understanding of the department and build relationships, this role is predominantly office based. You will have access to a clear induction plan to ensure you are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve success, an annual development review to support your personal development, access to University training courses to support your ongoing learning and development, and a supportive and inclusive working environment that encourages collaboration and supports wellbeing. Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment. Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University. We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part-time working or other flexible working arrangements.
