An opportunity has arisen for a 12-month fixed-term contract maternity cover for a talented scientific manager to join the Cellular Operations team here at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. This role is offered as an internal secondment opportunity, as well as being advertised externally. CellOps is composed of multiple teams that specialise in cell biology-based fields. We function as a core resource at the Institute, supporting Research Programmes in the delivery of cellular-based research with an emphasis on running projects at scale. Some examples of our current work include generating new organoid models from tissues and stem cells, CRISPR screening and creating fluorescently tagged cell lines.

About The Role

You will be responsible for leading and managing a team of 4-6 Research Assistants and Advanced Research Assistants. Your key responsibilities will include:

People management: Providing strong leadership, mentorship, and development opportunities for your team members, fostering a positive and productive work environment. Operational excellence: Driving continuous process improvements to streamline workflows, enhance efficiency, and ensure high-quality project delivery. Project oversight: Taking a leading role in the various projects, collaborating with teams across Scientific Operations and faculty partners to shape the operational project delivery and support the institute's aims. Performance management: Monitoring and reporting on key metrics to stakeholders, ensuring timely project delivery, and managing the performance of all team members within the project. Quality assurance: Ensuring the highest standards of quality for all data delivered, implementing robust quality control measures, and troubleshooting issues as they arise.

About You

To succeed in this role, you will need experience in scientific operational management, excellent people skills, and an understanding of the challenges of running projects at scale. Strong organisational and planning skills are fundamental in running large-scale projects and services, and you will need to ensure the team and all associated collaborators are fully informed of project status.

You will have relevant experience working in a supervisory role in a high-throughput life science laboratory, with a proven track record in process improvement. You will thrive in a collaborative environment, where you have excellent team working and communication skills.

Essential Skills

Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent practical experience in the field. Profound knowledge of cellular or molecular biology, coupled with hands-on expertise in a variety of laboratory techniques. Experience overseeing laboratory operations as part of a supervisory role within a team setting. Comprehensive understanding of process workflows and their efficient management. Ability to accurately interpret scientific data and troubleshoot a diverse range of issues.

Essential Competencies And Behaviours

Highly developed communication abilities, with a proven track record of establishing and maintaining effective relationships at all organizational levels. Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills, ensuring meticulous documentation. Experience in change management, including the interpretation of management information, amendment of plans, and prompt action. Demonstrated capability to work independently, organizing and scheduling one's own workload efficiently. Proficiency in collaborating with others and contributing effectively within team environments. Strong customer-centric focus, particularly regarding quality assurance, project delivery, and issue resolution.
