Job Description: The GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme) Sector Chief Engineer’s (SCE) remit is to provide leadership, oversight and direction across multiple products, technical and engineering activities within Leonardo UK Electronics division. The role is closely aligned with customer performance, function and programme requirements and Leonardo’s business objectives, including System Design Authority (SDA) responsibilities. The SCE for GCAP will encompass a large sector of >300 engineers, ensuring the strategy, plan and collaboration activities are clearly governed across a multi-national, multi-year programme. The financial scale of the role is significant, covering a circa £500M development activity over 10 years. This will require new ways of working, team motivation and organisational development to deliver for Leonardo, UK industry and the core nations prosperity agendas. The GCAP sector consists of two major product lines split into various research, development, production and collaborative working methods. Radar:

Future Radar development incorporating AR (Applied Research) and UK demonstrator activities, Jaguar (Japanese collaboration) and incorporation of a wider workshare partnership for the GCAP product, working closely with FCA (Future Combat Air) and future joint ventures.

DEOS (Distributed Electro-Optic System):

Future electro-optic system development incorporating AR and UK demonstrator activities, and incorporation of a wider workshare partnership for the GCAP product, working closely with FCA and future joint ventures.

As appropriate to each product, the remit covers development of prime equipment, simulation/rig equipment and test equipment for both development and production. Furthermore, the transition from development to production will also be under the responsibility of the Sector Chief Engineer. The SCE will be the senior engineering leader, technical champion and advocate for both the products and the Leonardo UK engineering and production teams. The SCE’s team or office will comprise of Chief Engineers from each of the products, Design Authorities for the equipment and other SME members determined by the programme/technical complexities as required, such as safety and security. The SCE will provide the System Design Authority (SDA) role (directly or as deputy) offering governance and direction from a design integrity perspective ensuring processes/procedures/legislation/security/etc. practices are surveyed appropriately. System Design Authority and Safety signatory for all Typhoon Radar products will be delegated to the respective product Chief Engineers and SDAs in their own right. Ensuring the products meet their respective functional and performance requirements.

Creation of a positive technical and engineering reputation for all GCAP radar products/programmes with internal and external stakeholders.
