We are seeking capable, enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our friendly and dedicated team in the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department within Blood Sciences. This post is based at the County Hospital site, but successful candidates are also expected to provide cover as required at the Royal Stoke University Hospital site in Stoke-on-Trent. You must have full HCPC registration for appointment as a Senior Biomedical Scientist along with an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology/Transfusion or equivalent and either an MSc, Higher Specialist Diploma or equivalent in biomedical science plus additional specialist training relevant to the post.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high quality and highly specialised diagnostic service through scientific and technical activities including performing laboratory investigations, analysing, interpreting and reporting results ensuring that standards of quality and service delivery. Participate in and advise on the routine workload, including complex and highly specialised techniques, using specialist knowledge and experience of practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. To have and use an extensive knowledge of the disease process and the clinical relevance and appropriateness of diagnostic tests requested. Therefore understands why certain tests (including the abbreviations and medical terminology) are requested in certain pathological situations and to advise clinicians regarding the clinical relevance and appropriateness of diagnostic tests. Take a lead role in service development and equipment or procedural evaluation, including the implementation of new techniques.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

BSc, Registration and Specialist MSc, HSD or alternative Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). Evidence of continued professional development (CPD). Knowledge of relevant laboratory data management systems and policies. Understands the importance of data integrity and confidentiality. Knowledge of relevant quality procedures. Health and Safety knowledge. Up-to-date knowledge of national Clinical pathology Accreditation standards and their application (as relevant to the specialty). Good awareness of current issues within Pathology locally and nationally.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

A minimum of 5 years post-registration practical experience of working in relevant Pathology discipline in a busy laboratory environment. One or more sub-specialised analytical or clinical areas. Supervising / managing staff. Training a range of 'students' e.g. medical, scientific and support staff. Pathology IT systems. Working with complex and specialist laboratory equipment. Maintenance on a variety of laboratory equipment. Participation in audit and service development projects. Active liaison with clinicians and healthcare professionals. Working in a team and alone Intermediate and accurate IT skills. Have good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination skills for accuracy and fine adjustment of equipment. Well-developed oral and written communication skills. Analytical skills with the ability to work in a methodical and systematic way. Effectively apply skills and knowledge. Work with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to their review. Work within safe systems of work and report any deficiencies in those systems.

Desirable

Experience of working in an acute NHS Trust. Experience in presenting data to clinical and scientific audiences in a range of formats. Ability to establish and maintain effective Pathology networks with internal and external colleagues.

Personal Qualities

Essential

Professional personal presentation and manner. Positive attitude and flexible. Must participate in the required rota pattern for the department. Prepared to work flexibly, including participating out of routine hours service arrangements when required to do so. Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary). Ability and willingness to fulfil the travel requirements of the post if/as relevant - primary place of work as per JD but occasionally may be reasonably asked to work at another site where the Trust has responsibility for Pathology Services.
