An exciting opportunity has arisen at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust for a Corneal Fellowship for a fixed term of 12 months.

The successful applicant is required to be registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice. Possession of FRCOphth/MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification is necessary. Applicants should be at Specialist Trainee grade or equivalent and be near to/completed their higher specialist training in Ophthalmology.

Candidates are expected to have experience in phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery having completed 250 surgeries with audit evidence of results. The ideal candidate will have to demonstrate the ability to operate independently without supervision.

This venture will provide the Ophthalmology opportunity to present widely and will provide an excellent level of management experience for future career progression.

Main duties of the job

8 clinical sessions, including 1 or 2 theatre sessions, along with audit/research and teaching sessions. The clinical sessions will include Cornea/cataract clinics and theatres. Clinical sessions will be cross site with opportunities to attend teaching sessions on Thursday afternoons. This post includes surgical sessions to allow a Corneal surgeon to develop their skills alongside a consultant ophthalmic surgeon. Working for our organisation

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

- To act as point of contact for corneal support to junior medical staff within the department and undertake some general ophthalmic outpatient clinic commitment. - To coordinate and undertake acute corneal service, under the guidance of the Consultant Ophthalmologist. - To coordinate all administration related to corneal transplant tissue. - To participate in all corneal clinics and theatre sessions.

Organisational

- Attending to administrative matters and correspondence relating to patients. - SPAs to be undertaken on-site.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. MRCOphth or equivalent. Successful completion of FRCOphth or equivalent. Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practice. Desirable criteria Previous Corneal surgical experience preferable. Independence in cataract surgery. Research Experience. Training and knowledge

Essential criteria Demonstrable experience of managing patients within Cornea in collaboration with other subspecialties to optimize surgical and ophthalmic outcomes. Surgical management of Corneal surgery. Desirable criteria Primary interest in cornea and general ophthalmology. Clinical skills

Essential criteria Cornea experience and skills similar to a trainee within 6 months of CCT. Demonstrable evidence of training and expertise in corneal surgery. Please be aware as per the new Immigration guidelines we cannot sponsor candidates with a salary (full time or pro Rata) under the current minimum threshold.
