Job overview We are looking to recruit a Senior Clinical Site Practitioner to join our well-established team at King’s College Hospital.

Site Operations is the nerve centre of the hospital and is responsible for patient flow and clinical support out of hours. The team works with the wider hospital 24/7 to achieve key targets including Emergency Access 4 hour targets and waiting lists. The work is varied and fast-paced where no two days are the same.

This really is an amazing opportunity for someone who may have ambitions of working in a senior management role whilst at the same time being an advanced clinical practitioner providing clinical support to the hospital during the out of hours period.

The shift requirement is to work long days and nights as well as weekends, some flexibility with shifts can be considered.

Main duties of the job The post holder will be required to:

Lead patient flow across the hospital 24/7.

Support flow out of the Emergency Department to achieve 4 hr emergency care standards and ensure patients are placed in the right bed, at the right time.

Lead the Clinical Site Team service out of hours.

Triage, assess, diagnose and treat inpatients, working as part of the Hospital at Night Team.

Respond to cardiac arrest, fire, security and other emergency calls.

Provide senior management support out of hours.

In the absence of the senior manager on-call, be prepared to lead the hospital site during the out of hours period for major incident or business continuity incidents.

Lead and develop junior members of the Clinical Site Team.

Actively participate in educational activity, audit, research and quality improvement projects.

Leadership

Assist in the resolution of any Clinical Site Management or Hospital at Night service issues within the trust, taking an active part in the investigation/resolution of both formal and informal complaints and adverse incidents.

Act as clinical leader across the 24/7 period.

Operational Management

Accountable ‘out of hours’ for the operational management of the Trust, implementing Policies and Procedures as required and providing support and advice to patients, staff and visitors.

Organise the provision of a safe environment for both patients and staff in accordance with Trust policy.

Clinical and Professional Issues

To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

To ensure that the NMC revalidation process is completed within the prescribed time frame.

To be fully conversant with and adhere to Trust Policies and Procedures.

Provide a clinically credible nursing-led out of hour’s service; as the practitioner responsible for the assessment of patients’ needs and deployment of appropriate resources to meet them.

During the out of hours period, act as first responder to ward and department patient issues and liaise with the on-call medical teams to ensure that the most appropriate person sees and treats any patient in an appropriate, timely and safe manner.

Advanced Clinical Practice

Work as a fully accredited Advanced Clinical Practitioner to undertake the following:

Cannulation and Venepuncture

Verification of death

Ordering, interpreting and acting upon X-Rays and imaging.

Procuring and analysing ABGs

Tracheostomy care

NIV and Optiflow

Catheterisation (male and female)

Independent/Non-medical Prescriber

Bed Management

Review the Trusts bed capacity as a whole and implement plans early to prevent bed problems occurring throughout the out of hour’s period and ensure that beds are utilised efficiently.

Support the work of the Bed Managers by ensuring any unresolved issues from the daytime period are dealt with in an appropriate and timely fashion, including the management of outstanding elective/tertiary admissions.

Ensure bed management is proactive and the A&E targets, in relation to bed management are met fully.

Ensure the smooth transition of patients from the A&E/Clinics/Critical Care area to an appropriate ward within a timely manner, assessing patients’ suitability to transfer as required.

Actively identify and resolve delays in patients moving from the A&E and between departments. Working towards creating plans to prevent them happening again in the future.

Education and Research

Lead on the development of the educational environment by actively contributing to the training and education of staff.

Be aware of and contribute to new nursing research which will underpin future nursing practice.

Promote and facilitate evidence-based practice and clinical audit within the trust, raising the profile and enhancing the contribution of nursing to patient care.

Participate in and assist with any appropriate trust-approved research projects.

Communication

Provide a calm and supportive approach to situations.

Be flexible and empathise with difficult situations.

Provide support and counselling when necessary.

Person specification Experience

Full portfolio of clinical skills as mentioned in the job description

Strong demonstrable team leadership skills

Certified Advanced Clinical Practitioner or MSc ACP programme in progress.

Knowledge

Minimum 2 years’ experience at Band 7 within Clinical Site Management

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
