Senior Clinical/Counselling Psychologist/Psychological Therapist

Job summary We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic clinical/counselling psychologist or psychological therapist who enjoys a variety of work roles to help service users and their families in the older peoples mental health team in Newcastle. Main duties of the job The post will involve supporting service users and their families living in the community with a range of issues faced in later life. These may include mental health challenges such as loss, bereavement, mood issues and self-esteem. Also helping people to manage health and cognitive difficulties, and family issues. The clinical aspect of the post will be to provide assessment, formulation and psychological interventions to help people improve their mental well-being. There is a focus on working within an experienced mental health multidisciplinary team with joint working and the provision of supervision and developing formulations and care plans key. Cognitive assessment will also be part of the role. In addition to working with people in their community, you will also work part-time in the day hospital which aims to help people presenting with more complexity or risk. Through joint working and teaching, enhancing and embedding psychological knowledge within the team is part of this role. Supervising trainee clinical psychologists from The Newcastle Doctorate course is also expected within the post as we are a training department and training in supervision methods would be expected. Research and service development initiatives will be encouraged for the post holder and they will be supported to develop within the post. Clinical leadership will be developed within the role. The psychology team provide a number of psychological approaches to service users including evidence-based psychological therapies (including but not exclusively CBT, CAT, EMDR, ACT, systemic therapy). Evidence of training in one or more evidence-based psychology therapy is welcomed. We have good links across the pathway of the mental health provision for older people in Newcastle and work closely with all professional groups as well as wider regional and national groups in psychology/older peoples services. As a senior clinician within the team, you will develop within your clinical, supervision and leadership role. Successful candidates will receive clinical and professional supervision from Principal or Consultant Clinical Psychologists in the department as well as being part of the psychology team which includes psychologists, mental health well-being practitioners, trainee and assistant psychologists. Person Specification Knowledge and experience Essential Knowledge of the theory and practice of psychological assessment, formulation and therapies for people over 65. Post qualification experience of providing assessment and treatment across a wide range of care settings. Experience of carrying out cognitive assessments and feeding these back to service users and professionals. Substantial experience of working with families and as a core member of a multidisciplinary team. Work as a clinical or counselling psychologist/psychological therapist for a minimum of 2 years and been in receipt of at least 50 hours clinical supervision. Training in clinical supervision and evidence of providing clinical supervision. Evidence of ongoing CPD. Skills Essential Ability to deliver training to others. Specialist skills in evidence-based psychological interventions. Effective written communication skills. Skills in managing emotional impact of dealing with highly emotive and distressing situations through self-management and use of the clinical supervision process. Proven track record of provision of research or service development improvement. Qualifications Essential Relevant professional qualifications. Relevant professional registration. Mobility Essential Able to manage the mobility components of a community post.
