Xero is a beautiful, easy-to-use platform that helps small businesses and their accounting and bookkeeping advisors grow and thrive. At Xero, our purpose is to make life better for people in small business, their advisors, and communities around the world. This purpose sits at the centre of everything we do. We support our people to do the best work of their lives so that they can help small businesses succeed through better tools, information and connections. Because when they succeed they make a difference, and when millions of small businesses are making a difference, the world is a more beautiful place. Platform Elements is a cross-functional agile infrastructure development team. The Platform Elements team builds platform products to enable Xero development teams to build and ship software in a fast, reliable and secure manner. Platform Elements leverages modern cloud computing tooling and continuous integration practices. Through our customer-centric approach, we aim to reduce the cognitive load for Xero Product teams. As a Senior Cloud Engineer specialising in cloud infrastructure, you will design, develop, and maintain network solutions and critical infrastructure patterns, primarily leveraging AWS technologies while incorporating additional capabilities across other cloud providers such as Azure and Google Cloud Platform. This role emphasises ensuring seamless connectivity and scalability, robust security, and optimal performance in multi-cloud and hybrid environments, with AWS serving as the foundational platform for key infrastructure initiatives. As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will: Collaborate on the design and implementation of cloud-based network infrastructure, including VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) configuration, advanced routing and connectivity patterns (including Transit Gateway and Private Link) and new and evolving network technologies like Service Mesh. Develop Terraform modules, templates and providers to automate the provisioning and configuration of cloud resources, ensuring consistency and repeatability across environments. Configure and manage gateways (e.g., VPN, Direct Connect) to establish secure and reliable connections between on-premises and cloud environments. Manage DNS services and records to ensure efficient name resolution and traffic routing. Create and maintain capabilities and practices around understanding connectivity at Xero to help our developers quickly understand connectivity issues and patterns to create solutions customers love. Monitor and analyse network performance metrics. Identify bottlenecks and optimise network configurations to improve throughput, latency, and reliability. Integrate network infrastructure provisioning and configuration processes into CI/CD pipelines. Automate testing, deployment, and rollback procedures to streamline the release process. Create rich experiences to allow developers to easily drive changes in our network infrastructure with safety and security built in. You will have the opportunity to: Work in a multi-cloud environment. Work with AWS services such as (e.g., VPC, Transit Gateway, Route 53, EC2, S3, IAM, Direct Connect) as well as Azure and GCP equivalents. Use Terraform for Infrastructure as Code. Work on networking fundamentals such as TCP/IP, DNS, VPNs, NAT, and routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF. Work with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions and TeamCity. Use monitoring and alerting tools like AWS CloudWatch, Prometheus, New Relic, and PagerDuty. Optimise network performance, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and manage cost-effective solutions. Work collaboratively in agile environments, contributing to team success and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Please note: We will be observing a holiday shutdown period, during which there may be delays in our recruitment process, including responses and updates. We’ll resume full operations in the week commencing 13th January. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Why Xero?
