Line management and supervision of Conservator (Engineering) staff. The development and supervision of volunteer projects to support the work of the Conservation Engineering and Care and Conservation Section. Monitoring survey projects, as delegated by the Conservation Engineering Manager in order to deliver strategic preservation programmes. Support, promote and ensure the accountability of the collections by working within IWM collection management policies and procedures. Using your skills and specialisation, deliver the conservation of objects and ensure any risks to objects are managed effectively. Be responsible for the induction of new Conservation Engineering staff. The post-holder will be required to work at any of the Museum’s sites as directed and will be required to work alternate rostered Sundays.

In addition, your duties will include: To identify and evaluate conservation options for objects, including hazard and risk assessments. Where relevant, working with stakeholders to ensure that appropriate measures are agreed and implemented. Setting priorities for your team to ensure completion and quality of work and goal achievement. Plan and set stretch goals and hold self and others to high standards of performance; demonstrating rigour and commitment to activities to ensure the best result for the Museum as a whole. Demonstrate an understanding of hazards relating to your work and ensure that your work practices comply with relevant Health & Safety regulations and guidelines, minimising risk to yourself and others. To implement treatment-based, preventive or conservation management measures based on agreed conservation options, ensuring that measures are commensurate with proposal for use (display and storage) and risk aware. Identifying materials and components required in a timely fashion with your Conservation (Engineering) Manager. Ensure that conservation measures meet recognised conservation and engineering standards. Monitor and evaluate the effect of conservation measures. To inspect, assess and report on the condition of objects in support of long-term preservation. Prepare conservation work-plans based on survey results. To ensure that all conservation evaluation, planning, treatment and recommendations are accurately documented and centrally held. To work with subject specialists (internally and externally) to develop and implement appropriate sources of further analysis, treatment or preventive care where these lie outside your remit or area of expertise. Exercising professional judgement in observing codes of ethics, conservation practice and legal requirements (such as hazard management). Informed by the context of the areas and use. Ensure that your practice, knowledge, skills and techniques are up-to-date, both at a general level and in relation to individual projects and tasks that you undertake. Train, supervise and quality assure the work of contractors, conservators, trainees, interns, students and volunteers in accordance with IWM policy, procedure and guidance. Carry out pre- and post-use inspections on equipment, notifying issues arising on return of equipment to stores. This job description is not all encompassing.
