As a senior data engineer, you will have a passion for turning data into information and insights which enable our business users to make more informed decisions in every function. Utilising our data engineering technologies, you will use your expertise in creating data assets and views that bring the data to life for the users. You will also support our ambition to create a self-service data mining environment. You will have the autonomy to create a self-service reporting strategy providing the necessary training for our users and investing in technology that makes mining data easier for the less technically savvy users. Key Responsibilities: Technical Skills/Strategy & Delivery: Programming/System Skills/Knowledge; Python, SQL, Spark Contribute to the delivery of our analytics strategy, enabling all users with the capability to access data and insights for decision making. As data engineering leader, create the global standards and principles for delivering consistent data engineering designs and tools across all engineers. Policy, Process and Procedures: Coordinate technical design on squad & data architecture team. Support the design and delivery of the data engineering framework on Azure Synapse, with a focus on building out our single version of truth. Co-Create the engineering standards for the analytical data sets and reports to ensure consistent delivery of analytical products. Review user requirements, lead the design of user interface designs in Power BI including guidelines for using appropriate visualisations to match the insights use case. Explain technical considerations at related meetings, including those with internal clients and less experienced team members. Review end product with the client to ensure adequate understanding and confirmation the deliverables meet user acceptance criteria before production. Provide data analysis, engineering, data model, and data management guidance to the rest of the engineering unit. Ensure that all code is well structured, includes sufficient documentation, and is easy to maintain and reuse. Gain expertise in tools, technologies, and applications/databases in specific business areas and company-wide systems. Troubleshoot software and processes for data consistency and integrity. Proactively seek opportunities to improve Aspen’s data to increase employee productivity, efficiency, and satisfaction. Identify/support continuous improvement and step-change opportunities to increase cost effectiveness and/or infrastructure flexibility. Environmental Awareness/Customer Focus: Deliver cost-effective, performant data services to contribute to Aspen’s profitability and business performance. Participate in both large- and small-scale projects for the design, transition, and operational activities associated with the delivery of new or existing data assets or services to the user community. Build trusting, productive, and sustainable relationships and partnerships with customers to allow our data function to deliver maximum value in the services offered across the data services portfolio. Work with key stakeholders/business managers to encourage adoption of our single version of data truth, ensuring this is used by all for delivering insights. Maintain regular contact with the business and cross-functional IT teams to promote, support, and monitor progress and ensure clarity for new and existing data capabilities and data assets. Develop and foster a service-oriented culture within the IT team to deliver and optimize service offerings and implement initiatives to drive consistent service delivery. Comply with external and internal regulatory and statutory policies, procedures, and regulations. Technical Performance: Demonstrate extensive experience in building data engineering pipelines within a data lake house environment. Significant experience in working within cloud-based data infrastructure, most notably Azure including tools such as Data Factory, Data Bricks, Synapse, and Power BI. Experience coding in both SQL and DAX. Basic understanding of Python and SQL within a Spark environment. Participate and undertake applicable professional, technical, and career development training (delivered internally and externally) to include attainment of associated qualifications where required. Skills & Experience: Specific professional qualifications at the level of degree or equivalent (e.g., computer science, management of information systems or similar). At least 7 years of experience as a senior data engineer and design experience in the Microsoft tech stack including on Azure cloud or AWS, Python, Coding. Expert in creating visualisations that support decision making. Experience within Financial Services (especially Insurance). Qualified within own personal discipline, with extensive post-qualification work experience to include: Evidence of supporting technical and operational strategy. Working as part of a senior team within a complex organisation (preferably within financial services industry). Hands-on experience with computer networks, network administration, and network installation. Strong data engineering experience using Azure engineering tools such as Azure Synapse as part of a single version of truth. Experienced in building data infrastructure and engineering standards to bring consistency for the data products. Expert in the selection of visualisations and charts to get maximum benefit from insights to support decision making. Strong communication skills both written and verbal. Able to manage conflicting priorities to achieve deadlines. Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment. Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills. Ability to analyse data and use it for decision-making. Strong attention to detail. People leadership – ability to engage and lead a team. Able to work independently. Able to execute within agile processes, tracking capacity and deliverables in collaboration with team members. Resource and budget management.
