One of my long-term relationship contractor clients has identified the need for a full-time Design Manager with steelwork experience. This may well suit a current Design Manager seeking a new challenge or a Senior Draughtsman looking to progress their career within the steelwork arena. With a healthy order book throughout this year into 2026, now is a good time to join a recognised Hampshire contractor.

Duties:

Manage the day-to-day activities of the drawing office team (both internal & external). Ensure projects within the drawing/design office are running to programme. Ensure design programmes & progress reports are issued in a timely manner, as per contract requirements. Ensure all project preparation (programme, tender drawing review, specification review) is dealt with in good time. Ensure drawing office/design resource (internal & external) is suitably secured in good time & drawing office budgets are maintained regularly. Maintain good communication with management structure & Fabrication teams to ensure programme commitments are maintained. Ensure key decisions being made are in line with project requirements, such as delivery quantities and specifications. Review critical works to ensure they are in line with the project specification and codes of practice. Monitor workload throughout your department and ensure this is closely monitored and managed. Where there are shortfalls or excess resource, ensure this is managed to the best interests of the business. Have an overview on variations/NCR's on projects and ensure these are communicated to the commercial department in good time and programmed sufficiently. Attend design meetings & project meetings when necessary. Report upstream regarding project progress on a regular basis. When issues arise, ensure these are highlighted at the earliest opportunity to protect business interests. Guide and assist in training younger members of the department (including any work experience) and ensure training requirements are met and support given. Provide general support and guidance throughout your team. Ensure Trimble Tekla software is managed - i.e. software updates, subscription renewals, general queries or issues. Ensure our drawing office procedures are maintained and kept up-to-date. Assist in keeping our ISO 19650 (BIM) accreditation up-to-date and making sure our (and the client's) BIM procedures are being met.

Responsibilities:

Build relationships with client project teams to ensure good lines of communication and working relationships are maintained. Ensure positivity and business ethics are pushed into the wider business teams. Assist with queries involving the estimating, commercial and site works departments. Ensure decisions being made throughout the department reflect the needs of the business from an ethical and commercial perspective. Deal with staff issues, ensuring that issues are dealt with promptly, in accordance with legislation and in the interests of the business. Attend internal management meetings and head drawing office/design departmental meetings. Manage your department holiday requests and general leave requirements. Interviews are being held in early February.
