As a Senior Highways Advisor within the Road Concept team, you will provide technical assurance, direction, and policy leadership on contemporary road layout and operating regimes, including Smart Motorways and Expressways. You will help improve existing design standards and help develop new ones that will ensure that the network is fit for the future, balancing the evolving challenges around congestion, road safety, sustainability and connected and autonomous vehicles. Your work will positively contribute to National Highways’ strategic objectives and will embody the company’s aim that no one should be harmed when travelling or working on the strategic road network. As someone with a proven track record of contributing to the development of highway schemes (and preferably Smart Motorways), you will play a pivotal role in helping shape the future of the design standards that underpin them, taking account of government stocktake outcomes and feedback from stakeholders to drive continuous improvement. This role is a full-time opportunity to be based out of any National Highways’ office, including Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Bedford, Manchester, Leeds and Guildford. What you’ll be leading on: Acting as a subject matter expert in Road Concept technical areas, including Expressways and Smart Motorways Supporting colleagues, contractors and suppliers in resolving technical issues relating to schemes within the Road Concept remit such as Expressways and Smart Motorways Contributing to the development and improvement of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges documents within the Road Concept remit Identifying, initiating, and managing appropriate research to inform policy and standards Working with others to take forward innovative ideas and solutions To be successful, these are the criteria that selection will be based on, and therefore must be clearly demonstrated in your CV: A relevant degree or engineering qualification Proven experience of developing technical solutions and providing specialist advice in road layout design, and desirably, Smart Motorways Comprehensive knowledge of current design standards for road layout, signalling and/or traffic sign design Ability to communicate and present outcomes effectively Experience of working in a programme and project environment Membership of a relevant professional body or working towards this A bit about us: Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES) is an exciting place to work.
