The role Bupa is the largest provider of private medical insurance in the UK and spends circa £900m pa for care provided to our members by over 800 hospitals and clinics. One of Bupa’s key goals is to provide readily accessible, high quality, affordable healthcare for our members. To that end the Hospital Management team actively works with hospitals to optimise services provided, improve quality and patient experience, and maximise value for our members. The Senior Hospital Contract Executive plays a lead role in managing contracts with and performance of a number of Bupa’s larger hospital providers. The Senior Executive is accountable for developing effective provider relationships, negotiating robust contracts, ensuring contract compliance, ensuring quality of services provided and maintaining effective cost control for the hospitals they manage. The Senior Executive will play a crucial role in delivery of healthcare reform initiatives that impact on their hospitals and will also lead a number of initiatives across all providers on behalf of the wider Healthcare Management team. You’ll help us make health happen by Accountable for contracts with and performance of circa 5 to 10 larger hospital providers comprising circa £50m to £100m spend pa, including at least one top 10 hospital provider. Lead key healthcare reform initiatives on behalf of the wider Healthcare Management team, shaping solutions, driving delivery through provider management teams and actively managing realisation benefits. Build effective relationships with hospital providers necessary to ensure delivery of Bupa’s goals. Agree and manage provider specific relationship development plans that reflect Bupa strategic priorities and provider goals. Consider provider proposals for development of new sites and services and approve where appropriate. Routinely review hospital costs and performance identifying, escalating and resolving emerging issues with the provider and then within Bupa if issues cannot be resolved. Secure sign off for contract renewal proposals / plans and negotiated contracts in line with governance framework. Conduct effective negotiations and tenders with hospitals to deliver agreements that meet Bupa’s strategic goals, financial targets and maximise value for Bupa members. Establish robust contracts and pricing schedules with hospitals that allow Bupa to effectively manage costs, quality and patient experience. Manage contracts with hospitals ensuring both Bupa and hospital obligations are met. Proactively identify risks in hospital contracts and ensuring that effective controls are put in place and monitored to manage risks over time. Working with Contract Assistant, ensure that all charge code screening and compliance controls are approved and in place. Work with the Claims Processing team to ensure that hospital invoices comply with the contract, non-compliant charges are highlighted to providers, payment adjusted accordingly and that hospitals correct issues at source. Satisfactorily resolve contractual queries and disputes identifying accounting provisions required for any potential commercial settlement of contractual issues. Maintain accurate records of all provider meetings, negotiations and disputes. Develop productive working relationships with colleagues in Hospital Management, the wider Healthcare Management team and service teams in Bupa. Act as a role model to other members of the team, sharing experience with and supporting others where appropriate. Key Skills / Qualifications needed for this role Highly analytical and commercial. Works with large data sets to identify trends, issues and opportunities and to model impact of solutions on customers and the business. Systematic approach to managing own workload and projects, prioritising competing demands from multiple stakeholders. Track record of rapid and successful delivery of performance improvements in a challenging environment, working with third party providers. Strong written and oral communication skills, explaining complex issues clearly and concisely, presenting compelling arguments / proposals using fact based evidence and research, adapting style for maximum impact with audiences. Builds effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, able to challenge constructively and resolve conflict / issues productively. Experience of negotiating with third parties to agree complex contracts, addressing conflicting priorities and securing favourable outcomes. Forward looking. Able to identify risks, issues, opportunities early and develop and then deliver effective solutions. Strong team player, focused on delivering own objectives while enabling / supporting others to deliver theirs. A role model to others. Energetic, positive attitude to work, sharing experience with and coaching others where appropriate, gives and listens to honest feedback. Educated to degree level or equivalent practical experience.
