Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our apprentices and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We could not exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong.

Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today. We are seeking a Senior Lecturer in Youth Work to join our School of Education, which has a long and proud history in education, childhood and teacher training. You will play a pivotal role in leading our new youth work degree apprenticeship and will be responsible for teaching across our programmes in Education, Childhood and Communities.

The Youth Work Degree Apprenticeship, housed in LJMU’s School of Education, provides an opportunity to gain a degree while working in the youth sector, offering a unique blend of academic study and hands-on experience. This accredited programme equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to support the personal, social, and educational development of young people. Tailored to meet the needs of both employers and apprentices, the course is designed to build confidence, enhance career prospects, and ensure graduates are fully prepared for the challenges of modern youth work.

This is your opportunity to be a key contributor to providing a high quality, exceptional and transformative educational experience for our apprentices, and to be part of our continued development and growth.

Minimum Requirements:

An honours degree or postgraduate degree in a related discipline.

A JNC youth work qualification, indicating professional recognition and credibility in the field of youth work.

Experience in higher education: proven experience in teaching at university level, particularly in youth work and education-related programmes.

Excellent communication skills: ability to effectively convey complex social concepts to apprentices and colleagues, both verbally and in writing.

Proven ability to inspire and support apprentices, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Teamwork and leadership skills: ability to collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and lead academic programmes, particularly in the development and delivery of the Youth Work Degree Apprenticeship.

Record of identifying areas of research collaboration and the ability to form collaborations.

Commitment to professional development: a proactive approach to continuing professional development, ensuring up-to-date knowledge in the fields of youth work and education.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies. This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing apprentices at the heart of everything we do.

You will be joining our vibrant School and Faculty of Society and Culture, at a pivotal moment of diversification and opportunities. We are a passionate and committed community of academics and professional support staff, which makes the School of Education at LJMU a special place to work and thrive.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Graham Downes, Subject Head, email: g.a.downes@ljmu.ac.uk

At LJMU, we value the benefits a rich and diverse workforce brings to our community and therefore welcome applications from all sections of society. The School of Education is currently under-represented with regards to staff from Black, Asian, and other global majority backgrounds. LJMU is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes eligible applicants from all backgrounds and communities irrespective of age, transgender status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and religion or belief.
