The Submarines business designs and builds world class submarines and it is currently delivering the Royal Navy's Astute class hunter killer and Dreadnought 'continuous at sea deterrent' programmes. In addition, the business is now designing the Astute class replacement submarine (SSNA) which is intended to form a key part of the AUKUS, the trilateral security partnership between the UK, Australia and the US.

Role: Senior Legal Counsel

This is a chance to work as part of a small but integral legal team on some of the largest and most complex industrial programmes and projects in Europe; and it offers genuine pathways for career progression and development within the Submarines division and wider business. As Senior Legal Counsel, you will have exposure to a great variety of commercial legal matters in a diverse role that can, to some degree, be developed to take into account your existing skills and legal experience. Specific duties and responsibilities are likely to include: Legal support and advice to all functions within the Submarines division; Drafting, negotiating, managing and advising on a wide range of contractual arrangements with customers, suppliers and industry partners; Ensuring the Submarines business is compliant with applicable legal, regulatory and business requirements; Participating in dispute resolution and providing strategic advice; Instructing and managing external counsel; Offering meaningful contributions and interventions in internal and external negotiations on significant projects.

About you:

BAE Systems Maritime - Submarines is a unique and diverse business environment and you are not expected to be an expert advisor overnight. Ideally, you will be a solicitor of c. 6+ years' PQE with a broad commercial skill-set and experience working on complex, high value commercial contracts. The hiring team are open-minded about your legal background and experience, and they have found that individuals from Commercial, Corporate, Project/PFI, Construction and similar experience have made the move effectively. Whatever your background, you should have solid experience in drafting and negotiation, and you will need to have the confidence and gravitas to work in a fast-moving, complex business.

Location:

Barrow-in-Furness is located on the edge of the Lake District in Cumbria and it provides an excellent opportunity for those seeking to live and work near the National Park. BAE anticipates that you will spend two days working in the Barrow office and three days working from home.
