The Legal Counsel will provide commercial and strategic legal advice and support to Abbott’s businesses. Duties will include analysis and provision of strategic legal advice focused on business-oriented solutions on a wide range of general commercial matters and regulatory matters. What You’ll Do Identifies routine to complex legal issues related to strategic matters across Abbott divisions; solutions focused and effective risk management capability. Negotiates and provides strategic legal support on significant matters and areas of importance directly to management and lead stakeholders across the divisions. Resolves moderately complex to complex legal matters day to day in practice area and elevates appropriately to senior legal leadership and other members of the legal team where support is needed. Keeps abreast of changes in laws that affect client areas; communicates these to business; represents Abbott externally to customers, suppliers, competitors or government agencies. Resolves legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise; coaches and directs assigned support staff in their responsibilities. Manages external counsel in a cost-effective manner to minimize risk to Abbott and provide effective advice to the relevant Abbott EMEA businesses. Advises EMEA and divisional counsels or other legal department managers of critical project developments/matters in a timely manner. Helps select and/or directs the work of outside counsel, defines project objectives and manages project. Required Qualifications Qualified Lawyer holding the necessary practice certificate as applicable. Extensive post-qualification experience. In-house legal experience required, preferably with some experience in the healthcare sector or other highly regulated industry. Essential: Strong experience in general commercial law. Cross border international experience. Instruction and management of external counsel. Strong drafting, negotiation and client communication skills. Strong project management skills. Appreciation of key USA and European anti-corruption, sanctions and compliance laws. Able to assimilate new areas of law quickly leveraging support from external counsel where appropriate.
