Job summary We are seeking a new Senior Medical Information Scientist, to join the UK Teratology Information Service (www.uktis.org), based in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. This national service, commissioned by the UK Health Security Agency and hosted by the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides information on all aspects of the safety of drugs and chemicals in pregnancy to healthcare professionals throughout the UK. We require an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and clinicians. The individual would contribute to undertaking research in the effects of drugs and chemicals on fetal toxicity, providing high quality medical information to health professionals and patients, and represent UKTIS at meetings and conferences at a national and international level. Interview Date Wednesday 05 March 2025 37 Hours 30 Minutes/Week NO AGENCIES PLEASE Main duties of the job Applicants should have a degree in a biological science subject or pharmacology, and a postgraduate qualification to Masters level or equivalent, or evidence of working towards this. They should have excellent communication skills, be able to work well in a team and be able to take initiative and prioritise workload. The post holder is required to have experience in interpreting data and critically evaluating the quality of primary literature as well as being able to produce high quality written material. The post will provide an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and motivated individual who wishes to develop a career in reproductive toxicology. This is a fixed term 12-month post. Job responsibilities To provide support to the Head and Assistant Head of Teratology and the UK Teratology Information Service. This service provides advice and risk assessment on reproductive toxicity following exposure to drugs, chemicals, and other noxious substances. Advice on the effects of deliberate and accidental poisoning prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy, and via breast milk. Retrospective risk assessment of congenital malformations and other adverse pregnancy outcomes. The main aim of the service is to prevent reproductive toxicity by delivering appropriate, accurate, evidence-based advice. The position has specific responsibilities including training NPIS staff in teratology, assisting in new staff assessments, maintaining the UKTIS database, and supporting colleagues in answering enquiries. Person Specification Qualifications & Education Essential Relevant first degree in Biological Sciences or Pharmacology A relevant postgraduate qualification to master's level or equivalent, or evidence of working towards this Evidence of continuing professional development Desirable Postgraduate qualification such as an MPhil or PhD in pharmacology, toxicology or developmental biology Knowledge & Experience Essential Experience in interpreting data and evaluating primary literature Experience in using scientific databases and literature sources Ability to produce high quality written material Desirable Experience in a health information/clinical advisory role Previous experience in a research environment Skills & Abilities Essential Ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines Highly developed listening skills Ability to train individuals and groups Skilled in Microsoft products Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and will require a submission for Disclosure to check for any previous criminal convictions.
