The Senior Medical Secretary provides an efficient and comprehensive professional secretarial service to the Consultants, their Team, and the wider department. To exercise initiative and independent judgement whilst maintaining a high level of confidentiality and diplomacy at all times. Main duties of the job
To undertake the typing of clinic letters, operation notes, pre operative notes, ward notes, discharge letters, specialist reports, conference notes, and associated correspondence of varied medical terminology, efficiently and accurately through audio word processing or shorthand dictation distributing as necessary to the relevant healthcare professions with a copy to the patient. To send and receive confidential patient information to and from other healthcare organisations, patients, carers, and relatives. Manage paper based or electronic diaries for the Consultant and their Team. Process incoming mail. Ensure all referrals and internal referrals are passed to the appropriate Booking Team. Deal with telephone calls into the hospital, a first point of contact. Regularly check digital dictating system for urgent work and prioritise workload. Person specification
Qualifications/Training
RSA level 3 English/Maths GCSE’s or equivalent Shorthand 100 wpm AMSPAR diploma ECDL/NVQ Experience
Previous Medical Secretarial experience Skills/Knowledge
Good knowledge of medical terminology Aptitudes and Attributes
Good communication /interpersonal skills Tact and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential information Ability to organise and prioritise own work To reward a higher degree of initiative and responsibility Team player/able to work flexibly Able to use a variety of computer systems Important Your application form must include a
