Senior Mental Health Nurse

Our team is multi-disciplinary and comprises of medics, nurses, health care support workers, psychologists, therapists, teachers, admin and support services who are committed to continued development and providing high quality care for young people and families.

We offer assessment, collaborative care and treatment to help young people experiencing mental health difficulties including low mood, anxiety, psychosis, eating difficulties, autistic spectrum conditions, young people who pose a risk to themselves, or where there is diagnostic uncertainty.

The Inpatient Lodges at the Becton Centre comprise of Sapphire, Emerald and Ruby Lodge.

Emerald Lodge cares for young people aged 8-13 who are experiencing mental health, emotional and behavioural difficulties and is part of the national children's network.

Main duties of the job

Coordinate and provide skilled nursing care to patients, in accordance with responsibilities under the NMC Code of Conduct. Participate in the continued development of nursing, including the supervision, teaching and development of junior nurses and support staff. Act as an advocate for patients. Plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for an allocated patient group, in consideration of individual need, using prioritisation and delegation skills. Assist the Lodge Manager in managing and developing the Lodge. Work collaboratively within a Multidisciplinary Team, internal and external to the organisation, to facilitate seamless care delivery for all Trust patients. Provide leadership to junior staff and manage the Lodge in the absence of the Lodge Manager. Support the Lodge Manager in their role and participate in managing the Lodge, staff and resources, to maintain standards within the clinical governance agenda. Represent the Lodge Manager at relevant meetings and forums. Deputise for the Lodge Manager when required and act as a role model and leader to other junior staff.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

Degree or Diploma Level Education as Registered Mental Health/Learning Disability Nurse (RMN/RNLD). Teaching, Mentoring and Assessors qualification. Current registration with NMC. Relevant post registration qualification as required for speciality i.e family therapy, CBT, parenting courses. Demonstrates a commitment to professional development.

Desirable

Relevant Post Basic Registration Course Leadership and Management training.

Experience

Essential

Substantial experience within mental health/learning disability. Mentoring experience with nursing students and training/development teaching of junior colleagues.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

Strong understanding of mental health conditions, therapeutic interventions, and risk management strategies. Knowledge of legal frameworks relevant to CAMHS. Ability to dynamically risk assess clinical situations and respond appropriately. Ability to manage complex and challenging situations with empathy. Ability to organise and delegate workload within a team to meet deadlines. Able to use own initiative and problem solve. Ability to use Microsoft Office packages and different electronic systems.

Desirable

Experience in Nursing Speciality of ward or department. Restraint and reducing restrictive interventions training.
