The Role As part of the Digital Research Infrastructure team, you will provide specialist technical expertise and leadership of the management and maintenance of a range of networking and cyber-security technologies, including next-generation firewalls (NGFW).

Reporting to the Discipline Lead Research Network and Storage, you will work under limited direction. You will be responsible for overseeing a team of network engineers to grow and maintain a highly productive secure network capability and maintaining technically complex and novel digital research systems across Defence digital science platforms.

You will work closely and collaboratively with other key team leads, the Cybersecurity team and other stakeholders within Digital Research Infrastructure to ensure that there is alignment in our planning, and day-to-day services to ensure that network services are fit for purpose, secure, and meet DSTG’s strategic initiatives.

You will lead the delivery and operations of a range of business-as-usual (BAU) network services and network security capabilities. You will also provide support for relevant aspects of the provision of secure network capabilities for major projects.

Key Duties: Plan, deploy and configure networking and network security systems, including NGFW technologies to optimise the ability to monitor, detect, prevent and quickly respond to cybersecurity threats Lead the day-to-day delivery of network and network security services Continually review and enhance proposed configuration changes, including firewall policies, and client security posture, to maximise the return on investment and network security control effectiveness Provide expert advice and undertake configuration of networking equipment and systems to strengthen the posture of DSTG’s research networks Anticipate and actively lead initiatives to position the use of networking technology to meet the challenge of the evolving cyber landscape Provide timely expert advice to the Cybersecurity team to assist with reporting and resolve identified issues and exceptions Mentor and educate staff in the development of technical, project, and related organisational/support skills. About our Team The Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) team, as part of the wider Scientific Computing (SC) branch, enables and accelerates Defence science and technology research and protects assets in DSTG’s digital research environments. SC does this by provisioning and supporting scientific computing infrastructure that is well managed, sustainable and scalable; continuing to invest in innovative centralised digital research infrastructure and services, while divesting commodity distributed ICT infrastructure and services; and developing new Scientific Computing practices and technologies. The DRI directorate provides secure, effective and efficient digital research and eResearch infrastructure and related systems where a sovereign capability is required for Defence’s S&T capabilities.

Our Ideal Candidate The Network Technologist will bring demonstrated experience in the design, deployment, integration, tuning, monitoring, maintenance and technical management of large deployments of enterprise networking and network security systems as well as: Demonstrated leadership experience in small to medium sized teams of IT network administrators Experience with managing vendor support contracts for network hardware devices and associated software products Proven experience in driving customer-focused excellence and applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills to meet science and technology outcomes and experience analysing complex technical configurations Demonstrated well-developed written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to communicate across a broad technical and non-technical audience to understand needs and identify appropriate uses of technology to drive business improvements A strong understanding of relevant security frameworks including the Defence Security Principles Framework, ASD Essential 8 and Information Security Manual Network Certifications (of any kind) We are looking for a communicator and collaborator who will be able to understand the needs of our varied customers and stakeholders and produce results according to their requirements.
