Science, Technology and Access to Finance (STAF) team

advises on how to make the most of this opportunity. We develop policy and oversee government spending on wider science Research & Development (R&D) and innovation policy, technology, access to finance and digital infrastructure. We also deliver wider spending control for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). These are top priorities for the Chancellor and Prime Minister, and require close work with teams across government, particularly in DSIT, Cabinet Office and No.10. In delivering on this important agenda, the STAF team is responsible for Treasury policy on the government’s priority technologies. These technologies hold exciting potential for scientific breakthroughs, business innovation and public sector productivity which are likely to transform society over the next couple of years. The team also leads on access to finance, including managing the Treasury’s relationship with the British Business Bank and delivering key policies announced by the Chancellor to unlock more investment into the UK’s most innovative companies. About the Job In this role, you will: Provide high-quality policy advice in a fast-paced, uncertain, and complex environment. Excel in providing clear advice with tangible, evidence-based recommendations. Demonstrate good judgement in providing an appropriate level of detail and connections to wider government priorities, to enable effective, timely decision-making by Ministers and senior officials. Build positive relationships within and beyond your organisation, including with businesses and investors, and use these relationships to deliver impact. Prioritise and self-manage your workload, ensuring that important work is done on time and to a high-performance standard. Provide high-quality management to junior colleagues, setting clear direction and providing the right level of support and challenge to drive high performance and deliver team outcomes. About You You will analyse and accurately interpret data from various sources to support decisions, identifying risks and benefits to provide high-quality advice and recommendations. Ensure competing priorities and interests reflect wider strategic priorities, adopting coherent government-wide policy and spending positions. Establish effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and communicate in a clear and honest way, delivering difficult messages with clarity and sensitivity when required and effectively manage competing priorities to deliver high-priority work to both urgent and longer-term deadlines.
