Purpose of Job

The post-holder is responsible and accountable for:

Collaboratively assist in assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care in the Post anaesthetic care (Recovery) and in Enhanced care unit (ECU).

In charge of the shift depending on the day of allocation either in recovery or in ECU.

Ensuring the provision of nursing care, maintaining high clinical standards, and be able to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

Exercising accountability as set out in the NMC/ HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.

Principal Accountabilities

MANAGERIAL

In the absence of lead and Deputy lead practitioner to ensure appropriate staff skills and equipment are available.

Utilise resources effectively using evidence-based best practice.

Respond appropriately to unexpected events to maintain service delivery.

Responsible for the safe use of all equipment and ensuring the training of the team members in the use of this equipment.

Assist in maintaining equipment asset register and ensuring maintenance.

Identifying safe staffing levels and adjusting staffing levels to avoid under or over staffing.

Stock checks and supplies management.

Communicate with all departments to ensure smooth running of operating lists.

Organize own work.

Orientate new staff, including bank, agency and students, to the department.

CLINICAL

The staff member is available to work in both recovery and enhanced care area according to the business needs.

Participate in audits to capture raw data and reporting; to improve the quality of care and ensure standards are maintained.

Ensure incidents are reported on the day they occur.

Assist in incident investigations, including providing statements and providing timelines where appropriate.

Follow up on action plans, as well as implementing/embedding changes as a result thereof.

Delivery of a high level of post anaesthetic care for patients within the Theatre Recovery Room.

Working with the Anaesthetic team to deliver high quality, safe patient care.

Maintain the skills and standards to manage level 1, 2 & 3 patients in the enhanced care unit.

Active member of the emergency response team.

Participation in the on-call rota and internal rotation of shift (including night duty).

Ensure personal compliance with national critical care competency assessments.

Participate in education, training and development of other staff.

Ensure all equipment is checked prior to use and any faults reported immediately.

Help to prevent cross infection by observing departmental policy regarding dress code and maintaining a clean working environment.

Ensure accurate and contemporaneous documentation of care and adherence to local policy.

Always ensure confidentiality, only releasing confidential information obtained during employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act.

Maintain the safe custody and handling of drugs in accordance with hospital policy.

Maintain awareness of current clinical standards and national guidelines for safe and effective patient care.

Ensure a commitment to improve existing skills within the post-operative environment.

PROFESSIONAL

Provide and receive routine information using tact or persuasive skills with patients or clients as necessary.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation.

Demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills, facilitating the handling of complex, sensitive, and often contentious issues.

Make judgments and decisions involving complex facts or situations which require the analysis, interpretation, and comparison of a range of options.

Follow Fortius policies and SOPs, advocating these policies and teaching them to junior staff.

COMMUNICATION

Report to Lead Practitioner any improvements that may affect clinical or clerical procedures of service provision.

Ensure effective communication is maintained between staff, line Managers, patients, and other stakeholders on all issues impacting upon theatre performance.

Communicate with all departments to ensure smooth running of operating lists.

RISK & CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

Follow Policies and Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures in line with NICE guidance, NatSSIPs, LocSSIPs, NCEPOD, RCoA and the Hospital’s policies and procedures.

Aware of the incident reporting systems, action plans in progress and contribute to sharing the learning from the past.

Aware of the risks in the department and escalate any new risks identified during the employment for safe practice.

Maintain confidentiality in all forms of communication according to the local policy and GDPR.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

Support junior staff and non-clinical support staff in their daily activity.

Assist in orientating new staff, students and new members according to the local policy.

Take responsibility as a shift in charge for the daily activity in the working area and for the staff's allocated roles.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Assist in management of staffing in a cost-effective way and follow controls to meet key workforce performance indicators.

Monitor the use of consumables and ensure daily charges are done to avoid financial loss.

STRATEGY AND SERVICE IMPROVEMENT

Support the new changes and innovations implemented in the working area by providing support and feedback.

Challenge existing practices, ensuring that progressive solutions consider models of best practice.

Assist in managing service improvement projects within agreed timeframes and financial targets.
