Summary

Freedom Professional Services are seeking a Senior Primary Design Engineer to join our growing team and work on an array of complex and challenging engineering projects, helping to deliver the country’s Net Zero targets. Our projects span the complete energy system from generation, transmission, distribution and storage to load-end consumers in manufacturing, processing, data and recycling.

The successful candidate will be able to evidence a history of teamworking, career achievement, high-quality project and work experience to date, and can draw on their professional networks to gain key insights, new work leads, third-party support and second opinions.

Some of the key deliverables in this role will include:

Promote safety through design and actively engage in hazard review meetings. Perform site surveys and collaborate with site teams as necessary. Develop concept and preliminary designs based on tender details. Generate and review general arrangement drawings, substation layouts, single line diagrams, and other related documentation. Prepare and refine technical specifications for designs and equipment. Carry out design calculations as required to support the plant design i.e. Switchroom Blast pressure calculation, Busbar sizing, Busbar short circuit calculations, Cable thermal mechanical force calculation, Cable sizing, Switchroom heating and ventilation calculations, small power, and lighting calculations, CT/VT sizing calculation, Compound Lightning calculations, Switchroom Lighting Calculation, Lightning protection design calculations. Ensure timely delivery, effective requirements management, and a right-first-time approach. Achieve key performance indicators for design quality and on-time delivery. Comply with project documentation, employer requirements, and industry standards. What we’re looking for: Senior engineers that join our team will need to have diverse skill sets to bring technical, ethical, social and management competence to every job that we work on, for all of our professional clients and key stakeholders. Strong budgetary and project management skills are required at this level, accompanied by good commercial knowledge of design and construction contract forms such as NEC, and experience of working within the contract conditions.

The business proactively encourages chartership in engineering, and senior engineers are expected to be chartered or close to achieving chartership.

You must have Qualifications and experience in: Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferable) Chartered Status (Preferred): Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a professional body such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) is highly desirable. Good working experience in EHV/HV substation plant design, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects within the power sector. Full UK Driving License Health & Safety qualification (NEBOSH, IOSH or similar) would be desirable but not essential.
