You will be joining a friendly, well-established team to play a key role in managing Hertfordshire County Council’s current and future waste management infrastructure including delivering on our ambition of zero waste to landfill and the pursuit of increasingly sustainable and cost-effective practises. This dynamic role will include partnership working with, amongst others, Hertfordshire district and borough councils and the Recycling Centre Team, to assist in the efficient delivery of front-line waste disposal services, whilst working with external contractors to maximise Hertfordshire’s statutory Waste Disposal Authority functions for the benefit of all Hertfordshire residents. The role includes a regular need to travel to key waste management sites across Hertfordshire and beyond to conduct site inspections and meetings, to ensure the efficient management of all waste disposal, haulage and bulking contracts within our remit. The candidate will be expected to establish a well-rounded knowledge of all associated contracts to enable them to contribute to the strong team-working culture that we already enjoy. About the role

Working as part of the Operations and Strategy Team within Hertfordshire County Council’s Waste Management Unit, you will lead and manage contracts and projects, provide operational and technical support for an evolving waste management network and develop initiatives related to our role as Waste Disposal Authority for Hertfordshire. The primary purpose of this role is to assist the Waste Management Unit in the delivery of its statutory functions, including managing waste up the hierarchy to ensure that it is sustainably and cost-effectively managed. This is a great opportunity to work in a fast paced, evolving environment to ensure that the contracts and infrastructure are in place to meet changing targets and legislation, including the Government’s recently introduced Simpler Recycling targets. The role will include cross-departmental work across a number of sites and research with both internal and external partners and in particular, the delivery of contracted services designed to meet the future sustainability and waste management needs of the service. This role offers a genuine opportunity to participate in and learn from exciting contracts, cutting-edge disposal and treatment technologies, and construction projects. By doing so, you can further enhance your knowledge of the waste sector while contributing to the Council’s vision for a cleaner, greener Hertfordshire. About you

As this is a short / fixed term contract to cover maternity leave it is essential that the candidate can ‘hit the ground running’ by having waste and contract management experience as set out below: Contract Management Experience Operational Experience, ideally from the waste management sector or from similar work areas (e.g., logistics) Confidence with information analysis and problem solving with experience of managing a diverse workload with multiple deadlines You’ll need to have the ability to drive and/or travel around Hertfordshire, using your own mode of transport Ability to work within a team and on your own Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders and build effective relationships. Working knowledge of IT Experience in Waste Management Working knowledge of the Waste Sector Experience of working for a Local Authority or private contractor providing services for Local Authorities How to apply
