ROLE: Site Engineering Manager LOCATION: Maesteg SALARY: Up to 60,000 Role Overview: We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead all aspects of the engineering function at our manufacturing site. This role is accountable for health, safety, environment, quality, people management, performance, and standards within the engineering team. The successful candidate will work closely with the Operations Director and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to develop and deliver the engineering strategy for the site. The focus of this role is to transition the engineering team from a reactive to a proactive approach, with a strong emphasis on improving OEM relationships and implementing forward-planned maintenance. Key Responsibilities: Health, Safety & Environment:

Enforce a zero-tolerance approach to safety, ensuring all personnel adhere to safety standards (Pre-start checks, PPE, Lock-off, contractor activity). Play an active role in creating procedures and policies as needed. Ensure all personnel consistently exhibit safe working behaviours and challenge unsafe actions. Manage safety and environmental incidents, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements. Communicate Health, Safety, and Environmental issues to the team. Ensure all project work meets health & safety and technical file requirements. Ensure statutory checks are up to date for relevant equipment. Consider energy consumption in equipment purchasing and capital projects, and implement routines to reduce energy wastage. Ensure the team is suitably trained for their roles. Contribute to the formulation and delivery of the site vision and strategy as part of the Site Leadership Team.

Quality:

Ensure all required process control checks and records meet company standards. Maintain equipment to ensure consistent product quality within tolerance. Assist with complaint investigations and provide feedback. Support product development trials.

People:

Develop and manage the engineering team structure. Ensure holiday management is effectively planned, maintaining schedule compliance during peak periods. Provide informal coaching and counselling to help team members reach their potential. Apply HR processes (attendance management, disciplinary, grievance) consistently within your authority. Identify skill gaps (e.g. hydraulics, PLCs) and develop strategies to upskill the team. Deliver training as required and conduct team briefs/toolbox talks. Collaborate with HR to foster positive employee relations, team working, communication, and engagement.

Performance/Cost:

Maximise and continuously improve equipment performance. Manage the engineering planning process to ensure high compliance levels. Drive standards in housekeeping and hygiene (e.g. clean as you go, proper equipment storage, tidy workshop). Contribute to identifying and delivering improvement projects. Manage the engineering budget (labour, overtime, repairs, maintenance contracts) and seek value-creation opportunities. Manage inventory levels through the engineering team. Develop and execute a plan to protect the site from equipment obsolescence. Oversee the site capital programme. Stay informed on industry technology and identify opportunities for process/plant improvements. Ensure compliance with company and industry standards for cyber security risk mitigation.

Person Specification: Qualifications: Degree or equivalent in a relevant field. Professional qualification (e.g., Prince2) desirable. IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate desirable. Experience: Electrical and/or mechanical qualifications, or a time-served apprenticeship. 3+ years of experience in a medium/large automated manufacturing operation with relevant safety systems and quality standards. Experience in leading a team. Experience in leading and delivering change desirable. Experience in budget control. Experience in managing capital programmes desirable. Project management experience desirable. Demonstrated use of data and analytical skills. Experience with computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS) and stock control systems. Experience with engineering schedule KPIs. Familiarity with continuous improvement/lean manufacturing techniques (e.g., DMAIC) is advantageous.
