Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
Arup is a multi–disciplinary firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists, working across every aspect of today’s built environment.
We are currently looking for an experienced solicitor to join our in-house regional team of around 30 people for a 12 Month Fixed Term Contract. The team supports Arup across the UK, India, Middle East, and Africa. Our preference is for a lawyer to join us in either Birmingham or London.
The Opportunity
As a Solicitor, you will provide legal support and advice on a broad range of issues relevant to a professional services business, including: reviewing and negotiating complex commercial contracts, ongoing project advice, dispute resolution, and broader strategic matters, primarily in a non-contentious role. Therefore, common sense, a collaborative mindset, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to juggle and manage a diverse workload are crucial.
Our solicitors play a crucial role in supporting the business in winning new contracts. This involves engaging with the commercial team, providing legal expertise during the bidding process, and addressing legal aspects related to winning new projects. The solicitor engages in negotiations not only with external law firms but also with clients. This requires effective communication skills and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
Knowledge of other areas of law arising in the construction industry would be useful, e.g., health and safety law, planning & environmental law, intellectual property law, data privacy, or public procurement law.
We are part of a closely integrated global legal team that offers many opportunities for development. You will be able to enjoy our hybrid work model that creates an environment that accommodates different needs and allows members to integrate their work and personal lives alongside the needs of our business.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share, and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas.
You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members, and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
We are looking for people who:
Are qualified lawyers with substantial post-qualification experience, whether in private practice or within an in-house team.
Have a strong background in construction (contentious or non-contentious).
Can provide legal and commercial advice on major and complex projects.
Have the ability to develop and maintain successful client and team relationships quickly.
Can manage internal and external negotiations.
What we offer you
At Arup, we care about each member’s success, so we can grow together. Guided by our values, we provide an attractive total reward package that recognises the contribution of each of our members to our shared success. As well as competitive, fair and equitable pay, we offer a career in which all of our members can belong, grow, and thrive – through benefits that support health and wellbeing, a wide range of learning opportunities, and many possibilities to have an impact through the work they do.
We also provide private medical insurance, life assurance, accident insurance, and income protection cover. In addition, you’ll have access to flexible benefits to help you look after all aspects of your wellbeing and give you the freedom and flexibility to find the best solutions for you, your family, and your individual needs.
