Job Summary
OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB:
To produce models and effects in line with Client specifications.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Supervisor in the preparation, construction, and execution of the models and effects in accordance with given technical specifications, to the quality standard for the job.
Communicate innovative ideas to the Supervisor.
Advise Supervisors regarding the most practical means of achieving the model/effect where technical expertise is required.
Keep the Supervisor advised of work in progress, highlighting any potential problems.
Deputize on the Supervisor’s behalf with other production personnel when required, discussing requirements while ensuring safety standards are never sacrificed for expediency.
Work within the given budgetary and timescale requirements for each job, ordering project-specific components and materials.
Assist and advise Technicians and Trainees as required.
Manage the Effects team when necessary.
Ensure all workshop procedures are carried out in accordance with the appropriate safety regulations, e.g., HSE and COSHH.
Carry out competent on-site maintenance and repair of special effects equipment, ensuring the equipment is kept in good working order and can be operated safely.
Maintain a complete and accurate work record/time sheet.
Applicable to those also involved with pyrotechnics:
Ensure that all safety aspects concerning pyrotechnic and fire effects are observed.
Be aware of the different types of pyrotechnic squibs and factory-made pyrotechnics commercially available.
Be aware of the material and equipment used specifically in Pyrotechnic and Fire effects.
PERSON SPECIFICATION - SENIOR TECHNICIAN
ESSENTIAL
Current clean driving licence.
Technical qualification giving good knowledge of special effects materials and equipment.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Model making.
Able to demonstrate a sound working knowledge of Workshop processes - machining, welding, moulding, vacuum forming.
Good knowledge of commonly used materials, i.e., plastics, metals, and timber.
Familiar with and experienced in the use of SFX equipment including smoke machines, steam generators, water FX and pumps, gas and flame equipment, air mortars, and motorised equipment.
Familiar with and experienced in all aspects of physical special effects and model making, e.g., mechanics, miniatures, and Animatronics. Understanding of electronics, mould making, painting, and finishing.
Knowledge of lighting equipment/materials and camera equipment.
Pyrotechnics:
Familiar with and experienced in common pyrotechnic devices, fuels, and equipment (firing boxes, test procedures, etc.) and familiar with the safety legislation relevant to this discipline.
Familiar with the different types of pyrotechnic squibs and factory-made pyrotechnics commercially available.
Familiar with and experienced in the specific material and equipment used in pyrotechnic and fire effects.
SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Innovative.
Calm under pressure.
Able to interpret and work to technical drawings and sketches and understand technical information and specifications.
Good understanding of electro-mechanical equipment and devices, wiring circuits, hydraulic principles and equipment, pneumatics, pumping and water systems, wire and pulley systems, gas and flame equipment, etc. Must have a good understanding of the safety legislation with regard to whatever mechanical, electrical, or other project undertaken.
