Job summary

We are seeking a proactive, motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Biomedical Scientists to work across our Synnovis site, Royal Brompton Hospital in Central London, and Harefield Hospital in Uxbridge. The successful candidates would be expected to hold HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist and have experience in Histopathology. You would be expected to hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio (if HCPC registration was via IBMS portfolio route). The post holder is expected to work weekends and participate in the on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as an experienced Specialist Registered Biomedical Scientist to contribute to providing a professional clinical laboratory service as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment. Able to perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Registered Biomedical Scientist. Develop and improve your professional expertise and specialist skills. Specialist Biomedical Scientists will be expected to supervise unqualified staff and deputise for section leaders when necessary. To contribute to the provision of specialist clinical scientific services to patients that may include research and audit samples. You will be required to work in the satellite laboratory at Harefield Hospital according to the departmental rota. You will be required to participate in a half day Saturday morning rota. Out of hours / on call - after appropriate training staff will participate in an out of hours on-call service. Staff undertaking on-call will work on their own initiative and take responsibility for that work within the constraints of departmental protocols. About us

At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. To provide and receive highly complex information to inform work colleagues or external contacts, other departments, GPs and visitors to the department. This may include providing advice, explanation of results and instruction. To attend the departmental Quality Assessment meetings and actively participate in the monitoring, assessment, and improvement of the quality of the laboratory's performance. To communicate any difficulties, problems, accidents or incidents affecting the delivery of the service or the department to a section leader/line manager promptly. To ensure that the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures and Health & Safety policies are understood and carried out by all staff. To ensure that all contact with patients, staff from other Hospital departments and visitors to the Department is courteous, helpful, and professional. Working on that site when required to do so Undertaking any Histology for that site including selection of tissue for frozen sections under direction of the remote pathologist Training other BMS to carry out any urgent work on that site including use of the Aperio slide scanning system and selection of tissue for frozen sections Ensure the Quality Management system for that site is maintained

To participate fully in the Departments quality assurance and audit programmes and assist in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance records. To assist with the review and updating of departmental documents (e.g. SOPs and risk assessments) for all aspects of the activity of the department. To assist and participate in the research activities of the department. To participate in the development, assessment, and introduction of new techniques, working practices and equipment. To cover for staff shortages as far as is reasonable, in order to maintain the service. To participate in the training, teaching and supervision of non or newly-HPC-registered staff such as Trainee Biomedical Scientists and biomedical support workers. To participate and help in facilitating the research activities of the department. To participate in an out of hours on-call service after appropriate training. Person Specification

Essential

Specialist Biomedical Scientist or nearly completion of specialist portfolio Participation in a recognised CPD scheme Desirable

Study for Higher degree or Higher Specialist certificate or equivalent Experience

Good experience in a Histopathology laboratory Able to demonstrate specialist knowledge and expertise Desirable

Experience of using Epic Beaker Skills and Knowledge
