Job Title: Biomedical Scientist – Infection Sciences (Bacteriology)
Location: Hub Laboratory, Taunton (with overnight on-call undertaken at our Essential Services Laboratory at Musgrove Park Hospital)
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (including lates, weekends and overnight on-call shifts)

We have a new and exciting opportunity for a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with expertise in Clinical Bacteriology available on a full-time and permanent basis. We are seeking individuals who are dedicated to providing a high-quality testing service and are enthusiastic about mentoring and sharing their knowledge.
Our Bacteriology team operates a 24/7 service working predominantly at the Hub Laboratory, Lisieux Way, Taunton.
You will have the opportunity to work in a laboratory which takes a leading technological approach with state-of-the-art 3 rd
generation Kiestra TMT system, Bruker MALDI-ToF and Phoenix M50 AST. The department supports testing for the local NHS Trust and primary care providers. SYNLAB UK & Ireland have extensive experience of working in partnership with the NHS to deliver and improve pathology services through its existing pathology joint ventures – including Southwest Pathology Services (SPS). Our team at SPS have been fundamental to the principle of making a positive difference to healthcare in Somerset for over a decade. We hold ISO15189 UKAS accreditation and are an HCPC approved training Laboratory for both IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolios. Responsibilities: As a Biomedical Scientist within the Bacteriology team, you will perform and interpret routine and specialist testing providing patient-centred scientific excellence whilst maintaining high quality standards in accordance with ISO15189. You will supervise, mentor and support other Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants within your department, sharing your knowledge, experience and passion for your work. As a registered Biomedical Scientist, you will have the responsibility of maintaining fitness to practice and participate actively in CPD. SPS will commit to support you in developing your skills and knowledge in line with your professional growth and our business interests. Most importantly, through our shared values, you will help to make a positive difference to the lives, health and wellbeing of those within our community that we serve. Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications and skills, then we’d love to hear from you: HCPC registration, with post-registration experience working in a busy Clinical Bacteriology department. Excellent working knowledge and experience working with Kiestra, BacTec, MALDI-ToF and automated AST platforms. A good understanding of the clinical significance of the results you are producing. To commence employment as a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist you must have your Specialist Portfolio in Bacteriology or equivalent experience (if HCPC Registration via IBMS Portfolio route). However, SPS is committed to support dedicated and engaged Band 5 applicants looking to complete a Specialist Portfolio. SPS offers automatic progression to Band 6 upon successful completion of the Specialist portfolio along with a retention bonus.
