A vacancy has arisen for an optometrist to join the hospital optometry team at Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary, including working at Cannock Chase Hospital. The team consists of 13 Optometrists, an ECLO & two optometry assistants. We are a developing team working across many of the ophthalmic sub-specialty areas, in addition to core optometry services.

The successful applicant for a band 7 post will need to have significant clinical experience; Hospital Eye Service experience is likely to be a significant advantage, but applicants with community experience only will be considered if they have the relevant type of experience & demonstrate the necessary aptitude for the role. Independent prescribing would be advantageous, but not essential. A band 6 development post may be considered for this position.

The department provides some pre-registration placements, plus training & clinical demonstration for junior medical staff & other health professionals. Therefore, experience of clinical supervision would be an advantage.

Depending on the number of hours that the successful applicant wishes to be contracted for, there may be an option to work compressed hours, including some evening clinics or extended working days. The working pattern will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

To work closely with the line manager in order to deliver a comprehensive range of optometric services to the highest standards of quality and care.

Undertake responsibility for patient assessment & management in extended role clinics across a range of sub-specialities within ophthalmology.

Participation in the delivery of complex specialist optometric services and a comprehensive range of core optometric services that meet the changing needs of the Directorate and other outside agencies.

Participation in clinical research.

The working environment is busy, with a challenging caseload, requiring a combination of high standards of clinical practice & good time management for clinical & non-clinical activities.

Duties cover a varied case-load including core optometry clinics including adult & paediatric refraction, low vision & contact lenses, plus undertaking extended role out-patient clinics in specialties such as glaucoma, retinal & macular, corneal & uveitis, emergency care clinics, plus research clinics. As a band 7 optometrist, there will be specialism developed in one or more of these extended role clinics, depending on the service need.
