Tysul Eye Unit is looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Specialist Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse for Ophthalmology. The post is based at Glangwili General Hospital but the role covers all three counties and some travelling will be required.

The role involves the Specialist Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse for Ophthalmology being the link that will guarantee that the patients undergoing surgical treatment have the best pre-operative experience. This will include an overall responsibility to optimise the pre-operative service provided by Ophthalmology, by means of optimising documentation, liaising with different colleagues to set up or modify protocols, optimising service delivery by liaising with other nursing colleagues and the waiting list officers, assisting with the implementation of new guidance, delivering training, suggesting and implementing service changes, assisting with equipment procurement, auditing processes and ensuring the necessary communication channels are in place.

The Specialist Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse will also work independently and expertly in assessing patients prior to ophthalmic surgery procedures, ensuring a comprehensive, effective, and efficient process is carried out for each patient.

Main duties of the job

Independently responsible for reviewing the patient's care, using the appropriate screening tools to ensure all pre-operative management care plans have been completed appropriately and the patient is fit for the pending operation, and is on the appropriate admission route. Identify patients who are deemed high risk of surgical/anaesthetic complications and coordinate care as appropriate. Manage a caseload of patients, coordinating care and services in order to improve the patient's surgical journey. Autonomously manage a caseload of patients. This may include patients who have complicated health care needs / anaesthetic complications and complex social issues within pre-assessment unit. Independently take a comprehensive medical history and perform a systematic physical examination, if appropriate, to establish baseline data and identify the individuals health and social problems. Improve the management of patients by optimising health via screening and full assessment, ensuring the appropriate investigations take place and treatment and care needs are identified, in keeping with evidence based practice and minimising the risk for the patient.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post. English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification Qualifications and Experience Essential Nursing degree/diploma and active NMC registration Evidence of continued training in pre-operative assessment or ophthalmic related topics at specialist post-graduate level

Desirable Post-Graduate qualification in Ophthalmic Post-graduate qualification in peri-operative care, anaesthesia and recovery, pre-assessment or other relevant area Specific training in biometry

Experience Essential Experience in ophthalmology and/or pre-assessment Willing to undertake training as required Experience in history taking and physical assessment Evidence of informal or formal teaching Good IT skills and willingness to learn how to use new software and patient systems Experience in supervising junior staff Ability to conduct clinical audits

Desirable Experience in biometry Teaching / mentoring qualification Experience with WPAS Participation in recruitment and selection Experience in participating in service development ECDL
