Job overview

Applications are invited for Specialty Doctors in Adult Critical Care at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board based at the University Hospital of Wales. Main duties of the job

The Adult Critical Care Service has a recently revised establishment of 28 Level 3 equivalent beds with physical capacity of 33 beds at the University Hospital of Wales. The physical environment and nursing model allows these beds to be used flexibly allowing expansion in Level 3 capacity. We also have a six-bedded Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU). The current demand demonstrates that expansion is necessary and this is being planned at present. The service admits a wide range of patients with the exception of post-operative elective cardiac cases. There are 1,600 admission per year of whom over 1,000 are Level 3. Our patient cohort is 50% surgical, 20% neurosurgery/trauma with the remainder being medical or other specialties. The Critical Care service supports regional specialties including nephrology and transplantation (renal and pancreatic), head and neck surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, upper GI, oncology, haematology and bone marrow transplantation. The University Hospital of Wales is the Neurosurgical Centre for Wales and accounts for 22% of the intensive care admissions. University Hospital of Wales is also the first Major Trauma Centre in Wales. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The major part of training & service consists of assisting in the day to day management of patients within the Critical Care areas, resuscitation, establishing and performing cardiovascular and respiratory (and other organ system) monitoring and support, prescribing drugs and nutrition on a daily basis and keeping regular medical notes on up to 32 ICU patients. The post holder will be expected to perform procedures (under the appropriate level of supervision). The postholder will spend a proportion of their day time duties providing day to day clinical management in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), in consultation with the various medical and surgical teams. The post offers unrivalled experience for any doctor who wishes to gain familiarity with intensive care and the post-operative management of major surgical problems, i.e. ideal for physicians, surgeons and anaesthetists. The post also offers exposure to HFOV, critical care echocardiography and critical care ultrasound. The postholder will be expected to provide support to more junior team members (F1 doctors and medical students) and supervise as well as teach those more junior trainees within the directorate. There are daily consultant rounds, 3 infection teaching rounds per week, one radiology teaching session per week and a protected daily teaching programme held weekly within the Directorate of Intensive Care.
